A known leaker has put out that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles is getting re-released for the first time on modern consoles since 2011.

Sonic Mania was heralded as the game Sonic the Hedgehog fans deserved, as the most recent releases have been received with less than expected applause. The rewind back to the classic 2D style of Sonic was widely celebrated and has been very successful. With this success, it's been a bit frustrating to see old Sonic the Hedgehog games hang around. However, that may be coming to an end as a known leaker has come out with news that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles will be returning at some point in the near future.

According to known leaker Zippo, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be making a return in the near future, albeit with some changes. Zippo goes on to say that there will be some changes made to the game, but to "stay tuned." While Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still available on Steam, it has yet to make its way to other consoles since the Wii. However, with Zippo's post, this might take on another manner and go on the more modern consoles available.

Zippo has been connected to other rumors, such as a new Donkey Kong game, and it's no surprise that they are pointing out that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles will be making a return in some manner. It's unclear as to how they're getting this information, but if it turns out to be true, then fans will have a reason to be excited.

While this could be exciting for classic Sonic fans, it's unclear as to how Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles will make its way to other consoles. With the franchise's 30 year anniversary upon players, it could make its way into a collection of sorts rather than a singular release, as it stands on Steam.

While 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games have been the main releases for the franchise, players still show their love for the classic 2D versions, especially with the release of Sonic Mania. With Sonic Mania being developed by fan developers, it stands to thought that Sega is looking at what makes a popular Sonic game work, and a re-release of an extremely popular 2D Sonic game would go a long way to helping the brand.

It's unclear as to what and when anything will happen. As it stands now, the only legal route to obtain Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles would be through Steam, but that could all change soon. If Zippo is correct, console fans will be excited for the future of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles is available now on PC.
