Marvel superheroes went missing in action for a while but the Avengers marked their return as one of pop culture’s most prolific franchises with the premieres of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, both of which turned out to be real winners for Disney Plus. However, by now it’s become official that the Captain America spinoff had a lot more draw for audiences.
Currently Disney Plus has roughly half the amount of subscribers Netflix, sitting at just over 100 million households, and while the former projects to fully catch up in 2024 this still means it’s a bit tougher for Disney’s exclusives to reach the same number of viewers its rival has. According to Nielsen Consulting, the be-all and end-all of television ratings, while both MCU miniseries have done fantastically well, they still fall short of reaching the same appeal of The Mandalorian which pretty much carried the streaming service on its own for an entire year.

While Nielsen has its own way of measuring data, it all comes down to ranking content by the millions of minutes of watch time put in by viewers each week, and going by that metric WandaVision brought in a weekly average 600 million minutes watched, a figure The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was already beating comfortably by week two and completely demolished in episode five (855m minutes) when it beat out even Netflix' biggest hits, just before Anthony Mackie’s big reveal as Captain America.
Even if both series were absolute hits, this does mean The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s movie-like Marvel approach still remains more attractive in TV format, although it still falls short of Star Wars' universal appeal as The Mandalorian’s second season easily surpassed the 1 billion minutes mark on a weekly basis, crowning it as Disney’s undisputed streaming champion for now.
So what does all this mean for Disney? Well, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did what only The Mandalorian and Pixar’s Soul had managed, rise to the top of the streaming charts, even despite Disney Plus being available to just half of Netflix’s user base. WandaVision was a niche departure from the MCU’s classic brand of action, which probably played its part in it not being as popular as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, though it still bear mentioning the latter had -arguably- more emotional depth in its characters than WandaVision did.
Perhaps even more impressive is reminiscing on the fact that The Mandalorian’s initial successful run was played to roughly 30% fewer people due to the number of subscribers at the time. Regardless of that, Disney Plus’ growth continues to impress and things are about to get even better as Star Wars: The Bad Batch consolidates itself and Loki gets ready to release soon.
