Dave Bautista knows what he wants and he might just do whatever it takes to get it. It's no secret that the Guardians of the Galaxy actor, who is known for his portrayal of Drax the Destroyer, has always dreamt of making a live-action Gears of War movie. But no one could have expected the lengths he would end up going just to attempt to get the idea greenlighted.
In a recent interview with Collider, Bautista admitted that he turned down a role in one of the Fast & The Furious movies in order to promote a Gears of War movie. He explained that during a meeting with Warner Bros., executives wanted to talk to him about Fast & the Furious, but he told them that he wasn't interested. On separate occasions, he also brought up other roles such as Batman's Bane. He said to them, "Let's talk about Marcus Fenix," the Gears of War character he's been itching to play.

According to Bautista, the execs were "a little put off" by his dismissal of the other role, but he explained that it was never his intention to offend anybody. He stressed that he simply finds Gears of War way more interesting, and he can't just pretend that he's interested in something that he's not. All Bautista wants is for them to take a chance on him and his ideas since he is "seriously passionate" about them and believes he "can do a good job" as Marcus Fenix.
With all of the video games that have been getting live-action adaptation projects lately, such as Borderlands, Twisted Metal, and Mass Effect, it's hard to believe that Gears of War, a staple in the shooter genre, still hasn't been given one. Pitches for a movie have been thrown around since 2007, but nothing ever came to fruition. Once ownership of the title was transferred to Universal, Bautista thought there was finally a chance that the movie could happen, but it seems that the studio has always prioritized other projects over it.
In spite of everything, Gears of War fans should be thankful for Bautista's efforts, especially as it could not have been easy turning down a Fast & The Furious role. The Fate of the Furious, which is the installment Bautista was supposedly offered a role in, ended up surpassing $1 billion at the box office in 2017, so it was surely a big missed opportunity. At this point, only time will tell if Bautista's dream will ever come true.
For now, fans can catch Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, which are now streaming on Disney+.
