Eight years after the release of the last game, fans have started to come up with many theories about what Grand Theft Auto 6 will look like. Fans have been dissecting every piece of information they can find, and have postulated some details about the setting of the next game in the saga. Unfortunately, as usual, Rockstar has not confirmed any of the rumors and is yet to officially announce the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in the near future.
Even though fans have been given literally no indication that an announcement for Grand Theft Auto 6 will be dropping soon, many think there might be news coming. Fans have been looking for Easter Eggs or any sort of clue about the possibility of a new game and its characteristics. Nevertheless, because of Rockstar's success with GTA Online, it seems like Rockstar is not rushing to release GTA 6, and instead is still enjoying the success of the franchise up to now.

One of the first rumors about the location of the next game indicated that Grand Theft Auto 6 will develop in Vice City. Although this location has previously been used in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, it is not impossible that the saga would be returning to that city. The other two locations introduced by the Grand Theft Auto saga are San Andreas and Liberty City. The first one is based on Los Angeles, the second on New York, and Vice City draws inspiration from Miami.
Both San Andreas and Liberty City have appeared in more than one game so fans have seen the cities redesigned over time. However, Vice City has yet to come back, which is one of the reasons some think it might be the location for the next installment. Another thing that added to the rumor of Grand Theft Auto 6 returning to Vice City is that Rockstar apparently owns a website labeled as Rockstar Cartel. Fans started connecting the word "cartel" to the world of drugs, and particularly to Miami, which is why some have inferred the next game will be set in Vice City.
Although the possibility of Grand Theft Auto 6 returning to the Miami-inspired location intensified with the leak of a map that seemingly corresponds to Vice City, the new game might be set someplace else. One of the most widespread rumors is that Grand Theft Auto will be releasing something called "Project Americas" which will include cities in South America. However, there is no real evidence of Project Americas being a reality.

Given how Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was situated in the '80s, many believe the new game will also be set in that decade. However, this rumor seems to not be as widespread now. Instead, many believe Grand Theft Auto 6 will be set in modern times. After a job was posted looking for a "Mixed Media Animator," some started to think that GTA 6 will reference TV and websites, meaning it cannot be set in the 1980s.
On the other hand, Dan Houser claimed a while ago that setting a Grand Theft Auto in modern times is a hard task. The co-founder of Rockstar explained that releasing a GTA game with current references is risky since it would be more prone to face backlash. Furthermore, Houser suggested that if the game included too many current events or winks to today's situation, it would be more likely to feel outdated afterward. Most likely, some of the trends which could be included might not survive to the end of the year, making the game feel obsolete quicker than necessary.
A third possibility would be that Grand Theft Auto 6 is set at some point during the 2000s. This might be a good idea since it appears to balance out the previous two options. First, it would include references that most people who are likely to play the game could identify, whether it is the current generation or not. Secondly, a game set in the 2000s is still consistent with the theory of the Mixed Media Animator job posting for GTA 6. Lastly, it could still feel nostalgic for more users to see the game take place during a time when low-cut jeans were more socially acceptable.
As part of the "Project America" rumors, fans theorized that the new Grand Theft Auto would have an interconnected open world system. Because a game set between North and South America would require a bigger map, some have suggested Rockstar will opt for a huge map. The rumor stated that GTA would allow players to travel between multiple cities, including those that have appeared in the game before. However, this rumor seems to be fake.
Another rumor started after fans found a patent filed by Take-Two for virtual navigation in games. This caused many to speculate about the new features an upcoming installment might include. Nevertheless, there is no sign that the patent was registered for Grand Theft Auto 6. There is a chance that the patent will apply to GTA Online, but none of these theories have been confirmed yet.
One of the things fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise have been speculating the most about is the possible release date of the new game. Unfortunately, it is tricky to make a good guess since Rockstar has not even confirmed there will be another installment to the saga. Nevertheless, a reputable source of leaks, ViewerAnon, reported on Twitter that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released in 2023. Even if this were true, there is a high chance the release date could have changed due to the unforeseen pandemic situation which caused delays in several industries.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is rumored to be in development.
