Conker's Bad Fur Day on Xbox Series X Has Major Problem

Fans discover a major issue with the Nintendo 64 classic game Conker's Bad Fur Day when playing it on an Xbox Series X or S console.

While the Xbox Series X can play brand new, cutting-edge video games, it can also play plenty of classic games. Thanks to the Rare Replay collection, one such classic game is the Nintendo 64 favorite Conker's Bad Fur Day, which stands as one of Rare's most-acclaimed titles to date. Unfortunately for those trying to play Conker's Bad Fur Day on Xbox Series X, though, it appears to have some difficulty running on both it and the Xbox Series S.

The issue happens during the boss fight with the Great Mighty Poo, which happens fairly early on in Conker's Bad Fur Day's story. According to Twitter user Arbliterator, who first brought the issue to Rare's attention, the game softlocks when players reach the boss fight. It seems as though the Xbox Series X and S consoles load so fast that it causes the music to go out of sync and make completing the boss fight impossible.

Sometimes Conker's Bad Fur Day players can pause the game and if the music stops, then they can resume playing the game like normal. However, if the music keeps playing, the Great Mighty Poo never opens his mouth and so players can never hurl toilet paper in it to deal damage. In effect, this makes it impossible for Conker's Bad Fur Day players who experience this issue to progress any further in the game.

Rare thanked Arbliterator for bringing this new Conker's Bad Fur Day bug to its attention, and promised that it has been passed along to the right people. A timeline for when the bug may be fixed wasn't revealed, but one has to imagine that it's not necessarily high on Rare's priority list. After all, Conker's Bad Fur Day first came out in 2001 and there may be more pressing matters for the team to attend to first.

While it's important to fix this Conker's Bad Fur Day bug, it's safe to say that others would rather see efforts focused on developing a brand new Conker's Bad Fur Day game instead. Despite Conker's Bad Fur Day's positive critical reception and general popularity, the game is two decades old at this point with no sequel in sight. There was a remake released for the original Xbox and an ill-conceived Project Spark experience, but otherwise the foul-mouthed squirrel has not had a proper sequel.

Microsoft says that it's up to Rare if it wants to make a new Conker's Bad Fur Day game, and for one reason or another, it seems as though the studio just isn't interested. Instead it seems to be focusing on Sea of Thieves seasonal content as well as its Xbox Series X game Everwild, though fans will have to wait for more substantial details on the latter.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is available on Nintendo 64 and Xbox through the Rare Replay collection.
