Rockstar Games has announced the release date for GTA 5's big PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrade and GTA Online's standalone release.

One of the very first games revealed for the PlayStation 5 was none other than the 2013 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title Grand Theft Auto 5 from Rockstar Games. While this announcement initially came as a shock to fans, who have eagerly anticipated the announcement of a Grand Theft Auto 6 for almost a decade now, Grand Theft Auto 5's next-generation port is a welcome upgrade to one of the most beloved and best-selling games of all time. Now, Rockstar Games has finally announced when fans can expect to get their hands on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S version of GTA 5.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was first released in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game is set in the fictional open-world of San Andreas and features an incredibly popular online component known as Grand Theft Auto Online. With the PS4 and Xbox One versions launching in November 2014, and a PC port following in April 2015, Grand Theft Auto 5 has become the second best-selling video game of all time.

Despite its overwhelming popularity, Grand Theft Auto 5 has not received any major visual enhancements on consoles since its launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2014. This means that the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will be the first time console players get to play the game with 4K resolutions, likely with frame-rate enhancements similar to the PC version. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S version of GTA 5 is slated for November 11, 2021. The developer has not yet detailed how the game will take advantage of the power of these consoles, only that GTA 5 will be "more beautiful and more responsive than ever." No plans for free upgrades from the PS4 and Xbox One versions have been revealed yet, either.

Rockstar has also announced that Grand Theft Auto Online, GTA 5's massive online component, will launch on that same day as a standalone product separate from purchases of GTA 5, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2's Red Dead Online mode. PlayStation Plus fans will be able to acquire this standalone multiplayer mode for free for three months after its launch on November 11th, and soon fans will be able to claim $1,000,000 of in-game currency every month leading up to the PS5 release.

As 2021 is also the 20th anniversary year of Grand Theft Auto 3, the revolutionary open-world action game that defined an entire genre and gone on to become another one of the most successful games of all time, Rockstar is planning to celebrate through Grand Theft Auto Online. While there have been rumors that a Grand Theft Auto 3 remake or remaster is being planned, these 20th-anniversary celebrations seem geared specifically towards fans of GTA Online.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game will release on November 11, 2021.
