Commander Shepard will have to decide whether or not Wrex should die in Mass Effect, but killing him can have consequences later on.

One of the many difficult decisions Commander Shepard must make in Mass Effect 1 is whether or not to kill Wrex on Virmire. The implication is that he could become a problem during the mission due to a conflict of interests. However, this decision isn't quite as difficult as the choice might make itself seem. Killing Wrex could have problematic consequences later in the series.

This post contains some story spoilers for Mass Effect 1.

When arriving on Virmire in Mass Effect 1, players will meet with the Salarian Captain Kirrahe, who informs Shepard that Saren is breeding an army of Krogan after having found a cure for the genophage. In Mass Effect lore, the genophage was a weapon against the Krogran by the Turians to impede them in reproducing via a genetic mutation disease. Kirrahe wants to destroy the cure as well as the entire breeding facility to stop Saren from breeding mind-controlled Krogan. Wrex is upset that Kirrahe would want to destroy a cure for a severe genetic mutation that has ravaged his people, and Shepard must either calm him down or take him out.

Commander Shepard should not kill Wrex in Mass Effect as there's no real reason to unless the player is going for a Renegade run. But quelling him won't be difficult if players have put 8 points in either Charm or Intimidate. Simply not having enough charisma points is the biggest factor in this decision.

Alternatively, if players have helped Wrex retrieve his family's armor before arriving on Virmire, then calming him down will be easy. Shepard won't need to use Charm or Intimidate tactics. Instead, Shepard can simply choose the options "I wouldn't do this otherwise" or "We are" when prompted to make Wrex stand down.

There will be several options that prompt the player to kill Wrex. Shepard can signal Ashley Williams to shoot him, or, if Shepard spends too long in conversation with Wrex, Ashley will shoot him in order to protect Shepard. Alternatively, Shepard can shoot Wrex themself, though Kaidan will pass some judgment on the Commander.

There's also the odd chance that Wrex will submit to Shepard without issue, which typically happens if Commander Shepard only has four specific squadmates: Kaidan, Tali, Wrex, and Ashley. Garrus Vakarian and Liara T'Soni cannot be in Shepard's party for this to happen.

Not much happens in Mass Effect 2 if Wrex dies; another member of clan Urdnot will step up as its leader. In Mass Effect 3, however, not having Wrex as an ally means decreased Military Strength levels.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
