Many Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players are not fans of the game’s Combat Knife, calling for changes to the melee weapon’s hit detection.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players have not been shy when it comes to voicing their frustrations about the game, with the latest issues being tied to hit detection. Particularly, fans think the combat knife in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is not working as intended.

This is hardly the first instance of players calling out issues with the combat knife, as the melee weapon was secretly nerfed after the game’s launch. Originally allowing players to knife one another without an animation attached, players felt like the game’s default melee option was perfectly balanced — making the addition of an animation confusing. However, while knifing becoming slower is one thing, melee hits failing to be detected by the game is another problem entirely.

A clip from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War player and Redditor jamesswazz showcases the hit detection problem clearly. While playing the new Sanatorium map from the popular Fireteam Dirty Bomb game mode, the Reddit User heads into a small ticket booth. Waiting out his opponent, the player attempts to kill the intruder with a knife when he enters the booth, only to somehow miss despite the melee animation triggering.

While this would be a big enough issue on its own, the fact that jamesswazz instantly follows up with a second, equally ineffective knife attack frustrates the player. Dying due to the faulty blade, the comments section is filled with other players saying that they have suffered from the issue. With Redditor screl_appy_doo suggesting that melee fans should just use the Wakizashi Sword instead, and Zorfoxzor saying “there were plenty of times” where their knife would bounce off an enemy, it seems like the hit detection issue is widespread.

According to Reddit user WhosMadYoureMad, though the knife is finicky in the entirety of the game, it is worse in “large team gamemodes” due to different netcode being used. As such, players will want to avoid the use of melee weapons until Treyarch provides a fix for the issue. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s next big update coming on February 4, adding new content like Express and Firebase Z, hopefully, the patch also brings some kind of fix for these hit detection issues. Players have already begun pushing for change in the comments section of the clip, and it seems like many would prefer to see Treyarch respond sooner rather than later.

With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War having some standout combat knife blueprints like the wooden stake, the rough state of the weapon is particularly frustrating. Unfortunately, completely avoiding the use of the combat knife seems like the best possible decision players can make at the moment.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
