In a surprising announcement, Naughty Dog reveals that The Last of Us 2 now has a PlayStation 5 performance patch available for free starting today.

While it certainly dredged up a lot of controversy prior to launch last year, The Last of Us 2 was a big success for Sony and Naughty Dog, also being one of the last big releases exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The lack of official news hasn't stopped the game from continuing to be in the forefront of players minds thanks in large part to the number of awards the game has managed to pick up both at the end of 2020 and even continuing into 2021. it has even managed to break a longstanding record, pulling in 300 out of a possible 576 Game of the Year awards.

Still, many former PS4 exclusives like Ghost of Tsushima and God of War have since capitalized on the new PlayStation 5 hardware by releasing updates to support the new tech. However, Naughty Dog has curiously been quiet regarding a potential Last of Us 2 update, even a year after release which continued to bewilder fans. As it turns out, the team has been taking some time to really delve into the hardware and at long last, has finally given fans an update on when TLoU2 will be going next-gen.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog's director of communication, Arne Meyer, acknowledged that one of the most requested items from the community is a PS5 performance patch for The Last of Us 2. Starting today, Naughty Dog has made that a reality with patch 1.08, which now gives players multiple options when playing the game from a PlayStation 5. Meyer also goes on to tease that this free update is just the first step, hinting more could be on the way.

A trailer was also released showing off the improvements and new options available to PS5 players including a selectable Framerate target of 30 FPS or an even smoother 60 FPS under display options. While the post and video don't go into too much detail, the PS5 version of The Last of Us 2 has been confirmed to feature enhanced resolutions, faster load times, and much more.

No doubt, this update will likely push for both new and old fans to check out the game's improvements on the PS5, which may even include some Microsoft employees as well. In a strange leak early this month, an internal Microsoft review of The Last of Us 2 gave fans an insight into what Sony's biggest rival thought of the game. The internal memo seemed to be generally positive highlighting the attention to detail and visual quality. However, the review also mentioned that some of the game felt like a walking simulator at times and that the combat was also a bit lacking. Still, Microsoft gave the game the ultimate praise by saying the narrative elements are exceptionally done and set a standard that other games in the genre should aspire to.

The Last of Us 2 is available now for PlayStation 4.
