Despite claims to the contrary, a couple of journalists insist that Starfield is nowhere close to completion and won't be releasing this year.

There has been next to no information about Bethesda's upcoming sci-fi RPG Starfield since the initial teaser trailer from E3 2018 which showed very little outside of a title. Despite the almost three years of silence, some fans believe that development has been progressing smoothly to the point where it will actually release this year. Others argue that that's being too optimistic and a couple of prominent journalists have now refuted the claims online.

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who is considered a very reliable source of information within the games industry, openly addressed one person's statement that Starfield is on track to release in 2021 and that development was mostly already done by September 2020. According to Schreier, this is simply inaccurate and Starfield is, in fact, nowhere near finished. He didn't provide an alternative release date, but he added that it's further off than most people expect.

He followed this up by saying that Starfield's development team was initially very small until 2019, since Bethesda Game Studios had been prioritizing Fallout 76 at the time. His comments were then backed up by The Verge's senior editor Tom Warren, who simply wrote that Starfield is not releasing this year.

Despite this, Schreier did say that Starfield will be at E3 this year, something that many fans have been expecting/hoping for. If this is the case, it could finally give fans a proper look at the game itself and its gameplay, as well as possibly share a more concrete release window. At the very earliest, it's looking like it won't release until 2022, but Schreier's comment about how the release date is further than some expect could suggest even a 2023 release.

There have been plenty of rumors circling around Starfield over the last few months. Aside from discussions about its release date, the other big one has been whether it will be an Xbox and PC exclusive or not. Technically, neither Microsoft nor Bethesda have officially stated that it will, but some insiders have stated that that will be the case. Plus, considering Microsoft went to the trouble of buying Bethesda, it only makes sense from a company perspective for the game to release solely on Microsoft's platforms. This doesn't necessarily rule out Starfield coming to PlayStation consoles; the game could be a timed exclusive for a year or something before making the jump.

Although Bethesda remains tight-lipped, in-game images have purportedly leaked online in the past. Most recently, several more have apparently popped up, but the pictures themselves don't reveal an awful lot apart from the game's general aesthetic.

Starfield is in development.
