Netflix's dominance in streaming does not mean the company is holding back its efforts to constantly put out more and more quality content. One genre where this has become a priority are fantasy series like The Witcher and the upcoming Shadow and Bone, which aim to get a hold of Game of Thrones' TV audience.
With a promising 2021 in line in terms of movies, Netflix continues to push out exclusive productions that satisfy current and new subscribers of all kinds but fantasy series fans won't have to wait too long for Shadow and Bone now. The series takes its name from the first of Leigh Bardugo's novels from the Grishaverse trilogy, which follows a teenager by the name of Alina Sarkov (Jessie Mei Li) with the power to control the sun's light.

In recent posts, Netflix finally confirmed Shadow and Bone will premiere on April 23 while also sharing some early shots of what the desolate land of Ravka and its characters will look like in the show. Aside from the female lead played by Mei Li, some of the other main characters can be seen in their Slavic-inspired surroundings, like General Krigan (Ben Barnes), Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) and Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux).
Shadow and Bone will be eight episodes long and will have Bardugo on board as executive producer, Eric Heisserer as showrunner, and Lee Toland Krieger in directing duties. Though Shadow and Bone had finished filming in February 2020 before the effects of the pandemic were felt around the world of entertainment, the producers recognized COVID-19 did slow down post-production quite a bit.
The series' plot revolves around the orphan Alina being separated from her previous life in order to be trained to take advantage of her newly found powers in the ranks of the Grisha, a group of soldiers that wages war against the Shadow Fold, a border cloud of darkness that threatens the lightless nation of Ravka.
Though the Grisha trilogy only accounts for Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising, Bardugo herself has claimed the series will take elements from Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, which take place within the same universe, albeit in a different location and time setting.
Shadow and Bone will be available on Netflix starting April 23, 2021.
