PlayStation and Xbox have been at loggerheads pretty much since the turn of the millennium. Ever since Sony launched the still-talked-about PlayStation 2 way back in 2000, Microsoft has been nipping on its heels since releasing its own console, the OG Xbox, in 2001. Unfortunately, for both companies, Nintendo often reigns supreme and a recent report suggests that its hybrid Switch console was way ahead in terms of sales figures for the beginning of this year.
Putting both the Xbox Series X and PS5 to shame, the market report drawn up by Ampere Analysis shows that the Switch has bested both the other two new-gen consoles by a country mile. The figures indicate that between January and March 2021, the Xbox sold 1.31 million units, while the PS5 sold 2.83 million, totaling 4.1 million overall. However, the Switch has outdone them both combined selling 5.86 million units in the same timeframe.

The report also states that sales of the Switch were up by 12% compared to this time last year. This may not be a total surprise to some considering the hybrid console reached a huge milestone recently when sales figures began to approach 85 million units overall. On top of that, Nintendo pulled in around 344 billion yen, just over $3.1 billion, from digital sales alone which cements the notion that the long-standing Japanese video gaming company is still one of the biggest in the world.
What makes these sales figures for Q1 2021 even more impressive is the fact that the numbers could have been much higher were it not for global supply shortages. With the effects of COVID-19 still being felt around the world, the likes of Sony are working hard to increase production of the PlayStation 5 in order to meet the increase in demand. With chip shortages currently experiencing a deficit, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles could be difficult to come by for the foreseeable future.
Despite the Switch coming out on top for the opening months of this year, it too is experiencing difficulties in meeting supply with demand. It was recently announced that Nintendo may struggle to manufacture enough units as a shortage of semiconductors begins to affect production of tech products. Still, it doesn't seem to have stopped them from smashing the competition. As supplies of parts used in consoles and other hardware remain uncertain, there's no telling whether the Switch will continue to reign over the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but it does bring to mind what the numbers could have been if not for the deficit.
