Publisher Devolver Digital and developed Team WIBY reveal Phantom Abyss, a game that could draw comparisons to Fall Guys and Indiana Jones.

Publisher Devolver Digital has unveiled its newest game and it appears to be inspired by Indiana JonesPhantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer experience that is headed to Steam Early Access next month.

Devolver Digital continues to add to its ever-growing library of unique games. From single-player action titles like Katana Zero to the extremely popular multiplayer title Fall Guys, Devolver Digital has skyrocketed to a value of 1.4 billion dollarsPhantom Abyss looks to only add to that worth.

In a tweet from its official Twitter page, Devolver Digital released a gameplay announcement trailer of developer Team WIBY's Phantom Abyss recently, and the game is already drumming up quite a lot of excitement. It could quickly compete with Devolver Digital's best games.

Based on the trailer and the Steam description, players are dropped into a procedurally-generated temple and asked to retrieve hidden relics. They also must do so while avoiding dangerous and deadly traps. Players only have a single life, so it is important to be cautious and smart. However, everyone is also racing to the finish against one another, so there will likely be a tension in attempting to do things quickly while also avoiding the dangers. Once players die or someone reaches the finish, the temple is closed forever and it cannot be played again.

There will be instant comparisons to Raiders of the Lost Ark, although the game will likely be quite different than Bethesda's recently announced Indiana Jones game. Phantom Abyss actually could play a lot like Fall Guys--Devolver Digital's biggest hit to date--as players race to the finish in an attempt to snag the final crown. However, while Fall Guys allows players to bump into one another, push each other off the edge, and "grief," the asynchronous nature of Phantom Abyss means that players will see competitors on-screen, but can not actually interact with them; a race to the finish but without collision effects.

Phantom Abyss also differs from Fall Guys in that it will have procedurally generated rooms, something that will likely keep players on their toes. The game will also rely on unlocks (including whips that can alter gameplay in unique ways), social features, and more, however, and it will be interesting to see how Team WIBY implements those things.

Devolver Digital continues to expand in intriguing ways. The group started working on Serious Sam remake and spin-offs, grew into a creative indie single-player game publisher, and has evolved into much more. Devolver Digital will be announcing more games at the Summer Game Fest and continues to juggle many different projects. Phantom Abyss is just the most recent example.

Phantom Abyss will enter Steam Early Access in June of 2021.
