Latest details about Dying Light 2 shed more light on the story, and there's some possibility of it taking a Prototype 2 turn.

Developer Techland's upcoming Dying Light 2 is one of the most hotly-anticipated titles this year. Ever since the reveal of the game back in E3 2019, fans have been clamoring to know more about the game. After an elongated period of silence and rumors surrounding a potential Microsoft acquisition, Techland has started to drop tidbits of information for fans in the form of AMA sessions.

The latest AMA in the line focused more on characters that players will meet in the world of Dying Light 2, which has cleared the air on some aspects of the game's story. Now more than ever, it seems that Dying Light 2's story might be strikingly similar to the Prototype games for a couple of reasons.

The original Dying Light's protagonist, Kyle Crane, is a GRE undercover agent sent to Harran on an operation to receive some sensitive information regarding the organization which is currently in the hands of Raiz. After a long and arduous journey through hordes of zombies, Kyle discovers that GRE intends to weaponize the virus and the documents in question contain proof of the theory.

The base game ends with Kyle parting ways with GRE, and working with Dr. Camden to continue developing a potential cure. The expansion, Dying Light: The Following revolves around Kyle fighting against a cultist group by the name of Children of the Sun. One of the endings involves Kyle being infected with a deadly and contagious virus as he slowly makes his way to a populated area outside the quarantine zone possibly causing another outbreak.

For the uninitiated, the first Prototype game involves a similar viral outbreak in Manhattan, which gives protagonist Alex Mercer supernatural abilities. Through the course of the game, Alex learns more about his past and finally realizes that he was the one who caused the spread of the virus (developed by his employer Gentek) in the city following which he tries to rights his wrongdoings.

Prototype 2 then features Alex Mercer as the main antagonist, as he releases the virus for the second time, causing chaos all over again. The player assumes the role of James Heller on a quest to eradicate the virus and kill Alex Mercer. While there's not much explanation available regarding why Alex chose to release the virus for the second time, the setup has a great possibility of reappearing in Dying Light 2.

A lot of this isn't confirmed at the moment, but there's a great chance that Kyle Crane may return in some form of the other. Dying Light: The Following has two endings that greatly differ from each other, but the developers haven't revealed yet which of the two is the canonical one. This carries huge implications for Dying Light 2, as one has a greater chance of seeing Kyle Crane returning for the sequel.

If the previously mentioned ending is indeed canonical, this new outbreak has some chance of being the setting for the game which could see Kyle Crane returning as the antagonist. While the developers have already stated that characters from the first game wouldn't be returning for the sequel, Kyle Crane is considered an exception owing to his impact on the first game's events.

However, fans should take this information with a grain of salt since the canonical ending isn't confirmed at the moment. All things considered, there is definitely some room for plausible speculation here and remaining hopeful, but not keeping expectations too high.

Dying Light 2 is currently in development.
