A Reddit user/Minecraft player has found the origins of the Creeper's iconic look that is supported by the developer's previous quotes.

When it comes to Minecraft, it's hard to think of anything more iconic than the Creeper. The common enemy found in the game has often been transformed into posters or plushies, as the Creeper has one of the most authentic looks from the game.

While many have wondered where the Creeper originates from, one player seems to have found where. The player then took to Reddit to share their discovery.

Posting on the Minecraft subreddit, a user by the name of undead_5775 posted an image that unmistakably looks like where the Creeper originated from. The image is that of the leaf texture from the game, with the Creeper's eerie face placed on it. This makes complete sense, as the creator of Minecraft, Notch, is quoted as saying, "I imagine Creepers as being made out of leaves or similar. I'm not sure why they explode." Comparing it to the original Creeper design, it's a dead-ringer in comparison. Responses ranged from comical to explanatory regarding the nature of the creature. In Minecraft, Creepers will walk around, sneak up on players and explode.

Pixel imagery is utilized throughout all of Minecraft, and when it comes to creating a plant-like creature, it's no surprise that reuse of texture occurred. Pixel artists will often create large grids of interconnected art that can be utilized in a variety of ways, such as reuse through maps instead of having to create an entire map in one shot. Pixel artists will also create sprite sheets of characters that allows the game to have all positions that a character can be in and orient them as they move around.

With the Creeper being as popular of an enemy as it is, it was only a matter of time before this was found. This may have also been made possible, as the Creeper has not changed its look, even with the texture update. The quote from Notch is quite telling, and examination of the leaf texture certainly yields the information. However, finding the correct collection of pixels must have taken some time.

In a sandbox game like Minecraft, curiosities will always be found and examined by the community at large. While not necessarily one of the greater mysteries in the game (why does it explode?), the origin of the Creeper and its iconic look is now solved. Minecraft players should be wary of the walking leaf.

Minecraft is available now on Android, Fire OS, iOS, New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, Raspberry Pi, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the Wii U.
