There are a couple of cameos in Army of the Dead that viewers might miss if they're not looking close enough, that tips off the extended universe.

Netflix's Army of the Dead officially released on Friday and there were more than a few who noticed something odd about some of the characters. The movie had some interesting cameos, though they weren't the kind of Army of the Dead cameos that most people would likely expect.

The excitement around Army of the Dead has been rather high among fans of Zack Snyder. It's the first movie that's hit streaming services since his extended cut of Justice League on HBO Max. It appears that he's attempting to build some serious momentum with his Netflix original movie. That includes inserting some characters in "blink-and-you-miss-it" appearances that are geared towards setting up the larger Army of the Dead universe.

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that some of the zombies in Army of the Dead don't look like an average rotting zombie. Those who noticed something was up, turned out to be right. Some of the zombies looked like robots. In one particular scene, one of the undead is shot in the face. Instead of blood and gore going flying, the skin on the face is torn away by the shot, and a metal head is revealed to be underneath. A freeze of the frame shows what appears to be a "Terminator" type zombie.

While some originally believed the reveal might have been a mistake, Snyder was clear the zombie robot was intentional. In fact, the famed director mentioned robots had a place in the world of Army of the Dead. Snyder said the zombies in the universe of Army of the Dead represent a kind of evolution. This was demonstrated by the fact that the main baddies weren't just shambling undead. Instead, they moved faster and were smarter than any of the characters in the movie expected. They also exhibited emotions like love, hate, and a desire for revenge. The difference between these zombies and what people usually think of when they think of these monsters remains a bit of a mystery. That too, was intentional. Snyder said he wanted ambiguity in the origins of these creatures.

Snyder added that the backstory and answers to the mystery of the zombies, and the robots will be offered in Netflix's upcoming animated series Army of the Dead: Las Vegas. He added that the robots are mixed in with the zombies. He didn't want to say exactly why that was the case.

The director added there were a couple of different reasons why they might be there. One option is that they were put there by the government to monitor the zombie hordes. Another theory has to do with where the original zombie came from. At the beginning of the film, there's a mention of Area 51 and the zombie and robots could all be from another world. It seems likely the origins will be revealed when the animated spinoff series launches.

Army of the Dead is available now on Netflix.
