Days Gone Peak PC Player Count Not as High as Horizon Zero Dawn's

Days Gone's PC port is performing quite well on Steam, but according to Steam Database, it hasn't attracted as many players as Horizon Zero Dawn.

Days Gone has been available on PC for a week now and it looks to be a successful second showing for Sony and Bend Studio's biker adventure game. As of May 23rd, it even managed to become the best seller of the week on Steam, overtaking the arguably more hyped Mass Effect Legendary Edition. However, it doesn't seem to have been as popular as Sony's first PC port: Horizon Zero Dawn, at least on Steam.

Currently, Days Gone is enjoying a higher player count of 19,053 players compared to Horizon's 2983, but that's mostly due to the former being brand new, whereas the latter has been available on Steam for almost a year now. But, according to Steam Database, and reported on by VG247, when Horizon launched on PC last August, it managed to attract 56,557 players, which so far remains its all-time peak. Days Gone's all-time peak, by comparison, is only 27,450, which it achieved two days ago.

What makes this somewhat surprising is the fact that Horizon: Zero Dawn's PC release was rather rough. When it launched, there were numerous reports of various issues, ranging from lag to the game outright crashing. Days Gone's PC port, on the other hand, was much more optimized and included more PC features.

Perhaps the main reason for this is simply because of each game's respective reception when they first released on the PlayStation 4. Horizon: Zero Dawn received plenty of praise from multiple outlets and was a sales success. Days Gone sold really well too, but the critical reception was more split. Also, of the two, it's Horizon that is getting a sequel for the PlayStation 5, whereas Days Gone's pitch for a sequel was rejected by Sony. Both games are available on the Epic Games Store as well, so it's possible Days Gone is outperforming Horizon there, but there are no official statistics to confirm this.

Despite Days Gone performing well on PC, it remains to be seen if this will have an effect on Sony's decision to turn down the sequel. Even with its mixed reception, the game has cultivated enough of a dedicated fan base to want a sequel. A petition to convince Sony to change its mind soon went viral and, at the time of writing, has over 115,000 signees. Sony hasn't acknowledged the petition and while there may be an audience for it, it seems very likely that there will never be a Days Gone 2.

Days Gone is available on PC and PlayStation 4.
