Disney has just released a new trailer for the latest movie based on a Disney Park ride, Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Disney has made a number of movies based on rides from the Disney parks, including The Country BearsThe Haunted Mansion, and the wildly successful Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The latest in park ride films is Jungle Cruise, based on one of the longest-running rides in the parks, and Disney has just dropped a brand new trailer for it.

Jungle Cruise stars Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson as a riverboat captain who finds himself taking a researcher, played by Emily Blunt, into the jungle on a mission to find a tree that is said to have healing powers. They along with her brother, played by British comedian Jack Whitehall, encounter risk, danger, and obstacles while sailing down the river. The movie also stars Edgar Ramirez, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti.

The trailer is action-packed, from the opening moments of Blunt and Johnson's characters trying to outrun some men chasing them, to the last seconds of the riverboat sailing away from a crashing and burning building on the dock. Along with natural enemies including a leopard and rolling rapids leading into a waterfall, the adventurers encounter some supernatural dangers as well. The trailer offers glimpses of villains made out of snake-like vines and swarms of insects, fighting skeletons, and all sorts of other monsters. Plemons' brief trailer appearance as some kind of villain in a submarine is also a highlight.

Jungle Cruise was originally scheduled to premiere in July 2020, but like many other major studio movies, its release was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those at the head of the project were unwilling to not give Jungle Cruise some kind of theatrical release. Jungle Cruise will now be released both in theatres and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 30, 2021. Premier Access means that Disney+ subscribers will pay a fee, usually $29.99, to watch a movie on streaming while it is still in theatres.

While theatres are opening in some countries all over the world, they are not open in all countries. In many countries, the audience capacity in theatres has been limited. This means that any theatrical release is a risk, even at this point in the pandemic where vaccinations are in progress in most places. Releasing a movie simultaneously on streaming, even with a fee, can help mitigate that risk for studios.

Jungle Cruise isn't the only Disney movie release this year to use this strategy. Raya and the Last Dragon did the same when it was released in March and Cruella and Black Widow will also do so upon release. It has yet to be seen whether this will become the norm for most major Disney releases, or if it's only the result of extenuating circumstances.

Jungle Cruise will premiere in theatres and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 20 2021.
