Under its Republic of Gamers brand, ASUS releases the powerful new ROG Phone 5, with features tailored for a mobile gaming experience.

As mobile gaming has evolved past the simplicity of titles like Angry Birds, phones have had to keep up. At the same time, as smartphones have become more powerful, mobile game developers have been able to create more complex and graphically intensive titles. Tech giant ASUS has invested in its own lines of smartphones, with the new gaming-focused ASUS ROG Phone 5 available now.

The ASUS brand Republic of Gamers (ROG) has brought gaming peripherals to the market since 2006. ROG provides consumers with products including motherboards, routers, keyboards, and gaming-focused phones. Recently, ROG even partnered with IKEA to develop a line of gaming furniture. The ROG Phone line launched in 2018, with the most recent iteration being 2020's ROG Phone 3.

The ROG Phone 5 features top-of-the-line technical specs, starting with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus processor. With 16GB of RAM and a 144 Hz AMOLED Samsung display, the phone will be able to run even the most intensive mobile games. The phone starts with 256 GB of storage, and its 6,000 mAh dual-battery design is said to give a full-day's worth of usage. The charging port for the ROG Phone 5 is on the side, so users will be able to keep gaming even when they need a charge.

Smartphones are also releasing with increasingly impressive cameras, and the ROG Phone 5 is no exception. It has a triple rear camera set-up with a 64MP Sony IMX6868 wide-angle camera, an ultrawide 13MP camera, and a 5MP macro camera. Many gamers also love putting RGB lights on everything from keyboards to room decor, and the back of the ROG Phone 5 is complete with a programmable RGB logo users can customize.

Anyone interested in the new phone can find it on ASUS' website, where it retails for $999.99. An Ultimate version of the ROG Phone 5 will also release later in the year, and will have slightly more memory and a lot more storage. Currently, ASUS is offering two peripherals to go along with the ROG Phone: the $150 ROG Kunai Gamepad or the $70 ROG AeroActive Cooler, which is a clip-on external cooling fan. A phone as powerful as the ROG Phone 5 might be a solid option for anyone looking to play mobile games ranging from League of Legends: Wild Rift to the upcoming Apex Legends Mobile.

As more companies like PlayStation are looking to expand into mobile gaming, options continue to improve. While the ASUS ROG Phone 5 might be a bit overboard for the standard consumer, anyone with a penchant for gaming on the go might want to take a look at it.
