New information provided by Sony after a mix-up in an investor report indicates that God of War Ragnarok is not yet the sequel's official title.

The latest God of War title has long been speculated to be called God of War Ragnarok, with fans finding many cryptic messages relating to the title since the release of the first game in 2018. However, due to new information garnered by IGN after a mix-up with a press-release image, it may be the case that God of War Ragnarok is not the latest iteration's new title at all.

After the highly successful God of War revitalized the PlayStation exclusive franchise in 2018, fans were highly expectant for a sequel, and were constantly on the look out for new information about it. When a PS4 background theme was released showing Kratos and his son in a boat etched with runes, fans quickly discovered that the runes spelled out the phrase "Ragnarok is coming," with other media echoing this phrase after the announcement of the God of War sequel in September of 2020.

Despite God of War fans finding these cryptic clues all over the place, the title may not be quite as set in stone as they thought. After IGN posted an article regarding Sony supposedly leaking the title of the game via a logo in an investor report, the God of War publisher quickly responded, stating "The name and logo for our upcoming God of War game are not yet final," and continuing to say that the name and logo for the game was "mistakenly used."

The original image on the investor report did indeed say God of War Ragnarok, however, Sony has since updated the logo with a more generic one, that simply says God of War. Creative Director of the God of War games, Cory Barlog, tweeted a reaction GIF of Picard face-palming, presumably as a reaction to the fiasco, with some suggesting that not only was the logo incorrect, it was actually a fan-made image that someone at Sony Interactive had simply pulled from a Google search.

There are a number of explanations as to how this all happened, it may be that God of War sequel's title is undecided, or simply that the specific logo is unfinished and someone out of the loop at Sony assumed they could pull the latest version straight from the internet. With so many clues placing Ragnarok at the center of the new game, it certainly seemed like an appropriate title, and Sony has waited a long time to officially weigh in on the subject. Whatever the case may be, if the latest God of War isn't named Ragnarok, then what might it be called?

The sequel to God of War is in development for PlayStation 5.
