Since the Nintendo Switch first launched in 2017, Nintendo has released a number of high-quality games to make the console a must-have.

Four years ago, Nintendo launched its hybrid home console/handheld the Nintendo Switch. As is typical of a new console release, the Switch didn't launch with a ton of high quality games, though it did have the groundbreaking The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild right off the bat. Four years after the Switch's launch, however, and the console has built up one of the most impressive libraries in gaming history.

The Nintendo Switch library consists of critically-acclaimed exclusives, well-regarded indie games, and enhanced ports of Wii U titles that it's safe to say the vast majority of Switch owners missed out on the first time around. Nintendo has done a tremendous job of building the Switch's library with regular releases, making it must-have despite its technical shortcomings when compared to its competitors.

If recent rumors are to be believed, Nintendo may soon be closing the power gap between the Switch, the PS5, and Xbox Series X, however. Rumors point to an upgraded Nintendo Switch console on the horizon, and while it's unclear if it will have any exclusive games of its own, it will undoubtedly have access to all of the Switch games that are currently on the market. The rumors claim that the upgraded Switch, dubbed the Switch Pro by fans, will have 4K resolution and generally superior performance when compared to its predecessor, meaning it will enhance the console's impressive library of games.

At the time of this writing, the Nintendo Switch has a whopping 95 games with an 85 or above average critic rating on Metacritic, making it a console to reckon with. For anyone looking for something to play on their Nintendo Switch, here are the best games currently available on the console.

Here are the 10 highest-rated Nintendo Switch games, according to review aggregate website Metacritic:

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 92
  • Bayonetta 2 - 92
  • Celeste - 92
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 93
  • Undertale - 93
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps - 93
  • Hades - 93
  • Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition - 93
  • Super Mario Odyssey - 97
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 97

Looking at the top 10 highest rated Switch games, and it's clear that the console has one of the world's most impressive libraries. Out of the 10 games, six of them are console exclusive to Nintendo, meaning they aren't available on Xbox or PlayStation. Some of the highlights include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, an enhanced version of the Mario Kart Wii U game with all of the DLC included, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, arguably the most ambitious crossover fighting game in history.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has new DLC on the way, showing the game has serious longevity and is well worth the investment for fans of the genre. Meanwhile, there's also the indie hit Hades, which is also available on PC but has yet to make it to any other home consoles besides the Switch. Hades won numerous Game of the Year awards last year, and so the fact that it's currently console-exclusive to the Switch is a pretty big deal.

The top two highest-rated Switch games are two of its most popular titles. Super Mario Odyssey blew critics away when it launched in 2017, with many hailing it as not just one of the best Super Mario games ever made, but one of the best video games ever made, period. The same story goes for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which has revolutionized open world games in a number of ways, inspiring countless copycats and imitators since it launched alongside the Switch.

For some, the 10 highest-rated Switch games by themselves would make the console worth buying. However, there are many other video games that make the Nintendo Switch library incredibly impressive.

There are many highly-rated multiplatform Switch games that players can get on the console or play on other platforms. While the Nintendo Switch versions of these games may not be as technically impressive as their counterparts on PlayStation and Xbox, they do have the benefit of portability. Since the Nintendo Switch is a home console/handheld hybrid, fans can play almost any games in its library on their TV or on the go, which is one of the system's major selling points.

These multiplatform games do a great job of padding the Switch's library, but what many people really care about are the highly-rated exclusives. Out of the previously mentioned 95 Switch games with an 85 or above critic rating, here are the ones that are Switch exclusives:

  • Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - 85
  • Pikmin 3 Deluxe - 85
  • Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda - 85
  • Luigi's Mansion 3 - 86
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - 87
  • Astral Chain - 87
  • Monster Hunter Rise - 88
  • Super Mario Maker 2 - 88
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses - 89
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury - 89
  • Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition - 89
  • Bayonetta + Bayonetta 2 - 90
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 90
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 92
  • Bayonetta 2 - 92
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 93
  • Hades - 93
  • Super Mario Odyssey - 97
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 97

The Nintendo Switch already has a deep, expansive roster of high-quality video games, and things are only looking up. Nintendo has a big E3 2021 presentation right around the corner, and that should give Switch enthusiasts a look at future titles that will likely crack the console's list of highest-rated exclusives.
