Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players share their frustrations with Dark Aether, once again asking Treyarch to rework the mastery camo.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies players are a dedicated bunch, meaning that many have sunk the dozens of hours into the mode required for Dark Aether. Unfortunately, not all Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans are satisfied with the reward for their efforts.

Dark Aether is the Zombies equivalent of Dark Matter from multiplayer, as it serves as a reward for completing every other camo challenge available in the game. Outside of DLC additions, players must max out every weapon class, completing time consuming objectives like killing 15 special Zombies and racking up 2500 headshots. With this process required for every single gun, players will need days’ worth of in-game playtime to obtain Dark Aether.

Once players do finally unlock Dark Aether, they will find their weapons covered in a purple material representative of Aetherium Crystals. Despite multiplayer’s Dark Matter Ultra being harder to obtain, many prefer the actual design of Dark Aether. The fiery embers scattered within the moving camo give players a powerful-looking gun that is worthy of their accomplishments, explaining why so many grind for the camo. However, ItzAreeb has shown that there is a big issue with Dark Aether, and it may make the camo a lot less appealing to some players.

As seen in the Redditor’s post, the grind for Dark Aether is pointless for LMG users. Using the M60 in the display, players can see that a vast majority of the massive weapon is unaffected by the mastery camo. With such a large barrel, and magazine, two components unaffected by Dark Aether, the gun looks unchanged. Only the back stock is covered, with players barely seeing this part of the M60 when using it in-game. According to DnD-NewGuy, a great fix would be to customize attachments with the camo.

Players also called out guns with similar issues, as small weapons like the MAC-10 suffer from the same problem. Further, it is not Dark Aether-specific, as players have suggested a gold camo rework and Dark Matter adjustments, too. While Treyarch Community Manager FoxhoundFPS told fans that the mastery camos would get an update to cover more of the gun, this occurred 5 months ago. As such, many are wondering if a fix is even still planned, with it beginning to seem more likely that Dark Aether will always look less impressive on certain guns.

On top of these hopes for a camo rework, many are also hoping to see Dark Aether become usable in Call of Duty: Warzone. While Raven has assured fans that the camo is coming, it is currently unavailable in the battle royale — giving those that worked hard to get it another reason to be disappointed.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
