Biomutant: How to Catch the Mirage | Game Rant

To unlock the Automoton's full potential in Biomutant, players must find a select number of Mirages and fight a few difficult battles.

Biomutant is an ambitious open world project, even if it has stumbled somewhat with its release. Biomutant's devs are working to improve various elements, but for now there are many problems with the game.

One of those problems is sometimes just finding important things. In one case, Biomutant asks players to catch a mirage when said mirage appears in front of them. However, this can sometimes be trickier than it sounds, and not for reasons that have to do with gameplay. Here's a quick guide explaining all players need to know about these mysterious mirages and what it means to catch them.

Each Mirage takes the form of a figure from the player character's past: a large, lantern-bearing creature. There's an actual point to the Mirages, and it is much more important than the regular side quests in Biomutant. Each Mirage can be used to upgrade the player's Automoton with new features. These are not cosmetic upgrades for the Automoton, they are new and very useful functions. There are four in all, so four mirages must be caught for a completely upgraded Automoton, which helps with exploration, battle, and sustainability.

In theory, catching a Mirage should be as simple as that: walk up to the Mirage and touch it. It's simpler (again, in theory) than getting water mounts, obtaining the strongest weapons, or finding hidden shops. After talking with a mirage, players must go through a difficult fight, but it's not required that they win. After the fight, players can choose from one of four Automoton upgrades. After going through four mirages, players will have all four upgrades: a pocket heal, a damage boost, a turret function, and glider wings similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These are useful in battle, and the glider wings are a major exploration boon.

Unfortunately, catching Mirages is somewhat harder than it is supposed to be. There is, as of this article, a glitch in the game that makes Mirages disappear. Players approach them, only for the Mirage to vanish into thin air and not come back. Because of this, some players don't even know that gliding is something they can do in Biomutant. Hopefully the glitch is removed soon, but until it is, actually catching the Mirages is something of a gamble.

Mirages pop up randomly, so there's not really a trick to finding them. They start appearing after talking to the Tree of Life, so that's a good place to start. After that, wandering around the map and hoping for the best seems to be the answer. Hopefully they become easier to find and catch soon so more players can enjoy Biomutant's awesome Automoton mechanic fully.

Biomutant is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
