The Elder Scrolls Online released in 2014 and since then it's been made available on nearly every gaming platform, with even more being added next month. Unfortunately absent are any of Nintendo's consoles and, for now, there aren't any plans for that to change. With that in mind, one modder decided to find a workaround and managed to play Elder Scrolls Online on the Switch.
With the release of the Blackwood expansion close at hand, there will be even more content for players to enjoy within the acclaimed MMORPG. This will put the tally at five full expansions, as well as over a dozen pieces of DLC, since its release. Wanting to enjoy this content on their Switch, one modder decided to bring the game to the console using Xbox remote play. They posted the results of their endeavor on Reddit, along with short step-by-step instructions on how it was done.

The modder, u/Gadaaavo, also posted websites and additional information on how other Switch owners can do the same thing for themselves. When asked if the process created any significant lag, they said that were was none, adding that it, "works perfect!" This method may not be as ideal as having Bethesda release the game for Switch, but it is the next best thing for those who want a little more mobility while exploring Tamriel.
As for next-gen console owners, an upgraded version of Elder Scrolls Online will release for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on June 15. The upgrade will be free to those who already own the previous console versions of the game. It was originally slated to release at the same time at Blackwood but was pushed back a week. This next-gen upgrade will have visual touch-ups, technical upgrades, and will generally play smoother and look better.
While the main Elder Scrolls titles explore one area of Tamriel, Elder Scrolls Online is much more expansive. One of the major draws for the game is the ability for players to revisit areas of the world from previous titles. In fact, the first expansion for the MMO was based in Morrowind, the setting for the third Elder Scrolls game, and the upcoming expansion, Blackwood, explores areas from Elder Scrolls 4. This opens up a lot more possibilities, allowing players to delve further into the series' lore. This has given players hope that Elder Scrolls Online might explore Dwemer Origins one day.
There seems to be no stopping the MMORPG, which recently passed 18 million lifetime players. This achievement solidifies Elder Scrolls Online as one of the most popular multi-platform MMORPGs in the world. As the title continues to branch out to more consoles and add even more content to the game, those numbers will surely increase. With so much to do in the game, it's no wonder Switch owners are finding ways to play on the go.
The Elder Scrolls Online is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions launching on June 15.
