Far Cry 5 puts players in a difficult spot when it comes to the fate of Eli, and many players are curious if there's some way to save him.

Throughout the story of Far Cry 5, players will get to know Eli, the leader of the Whitetail Militia. Though it takes a while, players work closely together with him, building trust and a true camaraderie. Unfortunately, as all good things must come to an end, that bond isn't unbreakable. This is something of a major spoiler, but partway through the game, the player will find themselves under Jacob's mind control yet again. During this sequence, the player fights their way through a ton of enemies with an arsenal of different weapons before coming face to face with Eli.

Far Cry 5 handles these brainwashing scenes in an interesting way, as the player still has full control over their character. It would be entirely possible for the player to simply choose not to shoot Eli, but doing this will inevitably cause the clock to run down to zero. This simply triggers a game over.

In the simplest of words, there is no way to save Eli in Far Cry 5, but that doesn't necessarily mean players have to kill him. As previously mentioned, letting the clock run down will trigger a game over and players will just have to replay the scene. There doesn't seem to be any other paths they can take during this sequence, as they either have to kill Eli within the time or start over. There's no chance to talk to anybody and seemingly no way out of it. It's an unfortunate situation, but it makes sense given that the player's character is under mind control at this time.

There is only one way to save Eli, and that is by simply closing the game and walking away. This is obviously not a great solution, and although a lot of players like Eli, it probably isn't enough to justify uninstalling the game and moving on to something else. This twist is a major part of the player character's story arc as well, so it's important that it happens for the story to play out the way that it needs to. Choices do matter frequently in the Far Cry franchise, but this was one situation where the player literally had no choice.

Many players report that Jacob's brainwashing seemed to work on them as well, as players frequently turn the corner and fire on Eli without even realizing who he is or thinking about what they are doing. Ubisoft conditions the player to act a certain way in these dream-like sequences, so the thought that it could have real consequences doesn't cross the player's mind at first.

Far Cry 5 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
