Developer of the indie darling Hollow Knight has opened up about what is in its plans for the future, and the games that could be coming down the line. While discussing development for the upcoming Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular metroidvania, Team Cherry made a quick mention about a new IP in its early stages behind the scenes.
This newest word from Team Cherry comes from an interview with co-directors Ari Gibson and William Pellen, conducted by EDGE, where the duo were asked about possibly taking a break after finishing Hollow Knight: Silksong. It doesn't look like Team Cherry is too keen on cooling down after the next game is complete, with some plans already taking form.

According to Gibson, there is a non-Hollow Knight title that Team Cherry has been working on in the background, though development has mostly been focused on getting Silksong ready for release. At this point its in the idea phase, with a collection of documents that come together to start building the foundation of a new title, though it wouldn't appear that the "game" has started to take form. Considering the small size of the studio and consistent updates that came to the original Hollow Knight, this likely hasn't been a major focus for Team Cherry.
While the new game appears to be outside of the Hollow Knight universe, Gibson did mention that it would be a similar experience to what players resonated with in Team Cherry's first game. Whether or not this means that players can expect another metroidvania is still in the air, as the experience Gibson described leaned into a large world to discover and interact with unique characters. It isn't clear what form this new IP might take once it goes from being a collection of documents to getting mapped out as a full game.
Considering Team Cherry's success with Hollow Knight and the fan anticipation for Silksong, seeing the small developer change gears and show a new project in the works is a welcome sight. Players might want to see more Hollow Knight content in the future, and it's possible that Team Cherry will head back into the universe after Silksong, but it's good for a developer to keep things fresh. Whatever this new project might eventually turn into, fans should be excited to see the developer branching out.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently in development for PC and Switch.
