Streaming service Netflix has officially announced that a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog animated series titled Sonic Prime will be available to watch next year. The announcement comes after Netflix seemingly released the news by accident via Twitter in late 2020, but only now have they given official confirmation.
The series will consist of 24 3D animated episodes and is described as "a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands. Sonic's adventure is about more than a race to save the universe, it's a journey of self-discovery and redemption." Sonic Prime is a collaboration between SEGA, Wild Brain Studio, and Man of Action Entertainment, who are likely best known for the creation of Ben 10.

This isn't the first time that the Sonic franchise has made news this week. On January 28, the franchise announced that longtime voice actor Roger Craig Smith would be stepping down from the role. The character is also celebrating his 30th birthday this year and has recently gone through a bit of a pop-culture resurgence with the success of Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2020. Though it was originally torn apart online for the original design of the titular character, when the film was actually released it was met with a lot of commercial and critical success. The film is currently North America's highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time and multiple sequels have been planned for the franchise.
Dominique Bazay, Director of Original Animation for Netflix, released a statement following this morning's announcement, saying, "I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it's a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix, one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy." And fans do certainly seem to be excited. Underneath Netflix's announcement, there are a huge amount of comments expressing excitement, as well as a plethora of memes, so this news clearly has a lot of social media hype.
Though there is no exact release date yet, the announcement does say that Sonic Prime will be available to stream in 2022. The Sonic the Hedgehog sequel is also slated for next year, with an April 8 release date and production to begin in March.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
