The Last of Us 2 is widely regarded by critics as of the best games of the PlayStation 4 generation, and for good reason. One of the things praised about The Last of Us 2 so heavily is the game’s combat, and it seems like there is a mechanic that has only been discovered now.
With the award-winning game being available for a while now, many would expect fans to have found every hidden mechanic and feature that the game has to offer. However, it appears that this is not the case, as a recent clip from Redditor onlylaiden depicts Ellie doing a mid-air reload. The movement looks just as cool as it sounds, as seeing the protagonist snatch the magazine out of the air while fighting members of the WLF is extremely entertaining.

The clip showcases the fight after Dina rescues Ellie from the WLF, with the brutality of the game’s combat on full display. In the clip, Ellie obliterates one of her foes, rushing forward to grab the enemy’s clip of ammo before it hits the ground. Successfully catching it, Ellie turns just in time to gun down her would-be killer. With onlylaiden using slow motion to give players the chance to see just how quick Ellie’s catch is, the moment becomes even cooler, as seeing one of The Last of Us 2’s protagonists reach out to actually catch the ammo makes it seem like the move was programmed into the game.
The comments section of the clip is filled with fans praising the gameplay of The Last of Us 2 and saying how cool this hidden detail is. One comment from Redditor owatnext says that the always controversial character Abby can do this as well, as the player grabbed ammo while choking out an enemy. Other comments take a more humorous approach, like VoyTron’s “Ellie is just built different” joke and ScuttlebuttPsst referring to the complex character as “Ellie Wick.”
While it is possible that The Last of Us 2’s PS5 Update removes this hidden feature, it seems unlikely. Not only is there an animation where Ellie goes to grab the ammo mid-air, but players need to trigger the action via a button press. By hitting up on the D-pad of the DualShock 4 or DualSense controllers as soon as the ammo enters the air, players can pick up the magazine just like onlylaiden managed to do in this awesome clip.
Players experiencing the game for the first time or replaying it to spend more quality time with Joel should keep this special trick in mind. If used correctly, The Last of Us 2’s combat could feel even better than it already does — and Ellie and Abby can become even more intimidating.
The Last Of Us 2 is now available on PS4.
