With the release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury just next week, Nintendo releases a new commercial for the game, but it is terrifying.

Out of all the Wii U games to make their way over to the Nintendo Switch, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury seems to be the most anticipated one yet. With snappier gameplay, added online multiplayer functionality, gyro control support, and an entirely new mini-adventure in the form of Bowser's Fury among other things, this enhanced port is coming jam-packed with new features, and fans can't wait to get their paws on it this month.

Excitement for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is at an all-time high, and while Nintendo finally revealed what Bowser's Fury is just a few weeks ago after keeping fans largely in the dark, it seems the company has still been hard at work promoting the game as much as possible. Now, a new commercial has been released for the upcoming game, but it is a bit strange to say the least.

As most of Nintendo's family-friendly commercials do, the newest advertisement for the game features four kids having fun while playing Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, traversing tricky platforming levels, grabbing power-ups, and doing likely anything else one would expect to see from a Mario game. However, as if the 2019 film adaptation of Cats wasn't enough, the commercial also features kids turning into cat people, not to mention getting cloned as well.

The commercial sees a young girl following cat prints into a living room where three others are playing Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. As the commercial progresses, hyper-realistic cat ears and a cat tail appear on one of the kids in real life, and later, the young girl is seemingly cloned, at which her mother looks on in confusion. Of course, the simple explanation for all of this is that the commercial is promoting the game's unique power-ups, like the Super Bell which grants Mario and co. the Cat Suit with feline-like abilities, and the Double Cherry power-up which clones the player, though, that doesn't exactly distract from the unsettling nature of the commercial.

Although this new commercial is somewhat terrifying, Nintendo made sure to include a "special effects added" disclaimer at the bottom of the screen, just in case anyone was worried about turning into a cat person while playing Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo is known for creating more lighthearted commercials for its products, but this commercial does stray a bit from its more recent commercials, which focused on featuring popular celebrities like Brie Larson and Awkwafina enjoying the Nintendo Switch.

The 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. has come with many surprises, and with celebrations concluding by the end of March, it seems Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury intends on finishing off the anniversary strong. With the game's release just around the corner, it's safe to say that fans looking forward to enjoying all the new features the game has to offer will be able to easily overlook this creepy commercial.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury will launch on February 12 for the Nintendo Switch.
