The Medium is finally out and fans are exploring their way through the creepy, supernatural world Bloober Team has created. Early sales figures for the game have been very impressive, as The Medium has already recouped development cost after less than a week.
Unfortunately, The Medium's release has not been the absolute smoothest experience, especially on PC. According to reports from DSOGaming, the most recent PC patch for The Medium has seemingly made the game run much worse than before, with CPUs and GPUs being under-utilized in the current build.

The report comes by way of DSOGaming's John Papadopoulus who has been busy running PC benchmark tests on The Medium since release. Last week, Papadopoulus reported that The Medium can't reach a steady 60 FPS, even with an Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card. The Medium utilizes advanced graphical techniques like ray tracing and DLSS throughout the game, so it's natural that most PCs would struggle to the run the game well. However, it seems that even with effects like ray tracing turned off the game struggles to run at a proper 60 FPS.
Now, the most recent patch on PC seems to have made the game run worse than before. Papadopoulus tested a specific dual-reality sequence in The Medium before and after the patch and found that the sequence ran significantly worse after the patch. Beforehand, the sequence ran at a consistent 83 FPS, with a minimum 70 FPS at certain points. Following the latest patch, that same sequence struggled to even reach 60 FPS, running at a consistent 58 FPS with a minimum of 41 FPS at times.
Overall, it seems that these new problems stem from general optimization issues that are hampering the overall performance on PC. Obviously, this is most likely not the outcome that Bloober Team expected with the most recent patch. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Bloober Team has not given any updates on whether or not the team plans to fix the performance issues caused by this most recent patch. It could be worth noting that Bloober Team praised the Xbox Series X/S consoles, saying they were very pleased at the ease of development and power the consoles allotted. So perhaps the PC version is not the team's main priority.
At the moment, players who want the smoothest experience for The Medium might want to try the Xbox Series X/S version if they have the option, at least until the PC version's optimization is improved. It's worth mentioning that The Medium has gotten positive reviews across a variety of different gaming outlets. Despite these optimization issues on PC, The Medium seems to offer a lot of great moments for horror fans looking for something reminiscent of classics like the early Silent Hill and Resident Evil titles.
The Medium is out now for PC and Xbox Series X.
