Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will use a universal character creator for each entry in the trilogy, utilizing Mass Effect 3's customization options.

Earlier today, BioWare unveiled exactly what players can expect from Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, highlighting that the title will be a 4K ultra-HD remaster of all three games with a ton of quality of life upgrades to sweeten the deal. All in all, it looks to be more than just a cheap cash-in on the series' name, offering an overhauled take on the trilogy that will soon become the definitive way to play through the trifecta of RPG classics.

From improved Mako controls to tweaked combat for Mass Effect 1, there will be tons of new goodies for returning players, with one of the biggest additions being the collection's universal character creator. With Mass Effect's character customization options changing vastly over the three games, it seems now players will be able to use one unified character creator for every title, focusing on the one implemented in Mass Effect 3.

The biggest news from this change is that the default female Commander Shepard for Mass Effect 1 and 2 will be the one offered in Mass Effect 3, which is a big relief for those who grew frustrated with BioWare not settling on a defining female face for the character until the third game. For those who prefer to apply their own look to Commander Shepard, they can look forward to all the additional customization options added throughout the series to be included from the first game onwards. Better yet, BioWare has even added a few options to sweeten the deal.

Players will now allegedly have access to a wider range of makeup, skin tones, and hairstyles, with BioWare apparently focusing on adding more hairstyles for Black characters in particular. Overall, it seems like the character creator will be more consistent between games, all the while adding more options to allow players to create their perfect rendition of Commander Shepard. It will also seemingly ease some issues players had before with porting their character from Mass Effect 2 to Mass Effect 3.

As for Mass Effect: Legendary Edition's other changes, the game will have a significant graphical overhaul of the first Mass Effect, which fans agree has aged the worse out of the trifecta of games. The classic title will have significantly enhanced visuals and a number of major combat changes, such as smoother aiming, more effective tactical commands, and AI that responds more realistically to combat situations. The game's autosave will also be much less temperamental, saving more frequently. Other changes to the trilogy include overhauling Mass Effect 3's galactic readiness feature to take into account all three games and compiling all titles into one handy new launcher.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition will release on May 14 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
