From care packages that disappear to randomly appearing textures from old games, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players have experienced their fair share of bugs and glitches. However, while some are minor inconveniences, others can be devastating — such as this issue which sees the mini-map disappearing from a player's HUD entirely.
When it was revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War would be bringing back the classic mini map, dropping the new radar system introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, fans were excited to have the chance to play like they were used to playing for years. However, Redditor A-Aron_James did not get to experience the mini map system in one of his matches, as for some reason there is no mini map to be seen.

Playing on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Nuketown 24/7 playlist, the gamer is stuck playing the entire match with no mini map whatsoever. While the player’s Plague Diamond camo implies that they are experienced with the game, the mini map is used for more than just helping new players find their way around the area. Showing enemy positions when they fire their weapons, the mini map is essential for knowing where opponents are and playing around that — using the radar pings to determine which areas are safe and which are not.
According to the player, this issue lasted the entire match, making scorestreaks like the H.A.R.P. and UAVs entirely useless. According to the comments section, this is hardly a one-off issue, as Reddit user XT3M3 claims to have seen the bug occur during their Twitch stream. Beyond that, Redditor K0A0 had this happen in their game, activating two UAVs in an attempt to fix the bug. Unfortunately, neither worked, leaving the player hopeless for the remainder of the match.
While fans of Call of Duty’s hardcore modes are used to having no mini map, the HUD is stripped away as well, making this lack of mini-map extremely odd to look at. With the only positive takeaway being a funny comment from theecynicalchef, as the player jokes, “now if we can get this experience in Zombies,” this confusing mini map moment is a solid example of why fans of the series are asking for an end to the yearly release schedule for Call of Duty games.
With a tight development window combined with the effects of COVID-19 on video game development, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s rough state is understandable. Still, bugs as severe as this one are frustrating to deal with, and hopefully Treyarch can release a fix for the issue quickly.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
