After the death of Warren Vidic and Daniel Cross, Otso Berg became the face of the Templars. He went from a higher-ranking Templar to the Black Cross, a face and faction mysteriously absent in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Despite the fact that Otso Berg has Viking ancestors, making it seem an obvious connection, his last appearance is in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
This moment is a bit odd. It's left open to interpretation, it isn't followed up in the main story of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and the Templar themselves have no role in the modern-day story since. That's not to say the Templars are gone, though. It's much more likely that something big is building behind the scenes, but whether Otso Berg remains the "face" of the organization is still up in the air. MASSIVE SPOILERS ahead for AC Valhalla.

Otso Berg appears at the end of Assassin's Creed Odyssey's DLC run. Having pursued Layla to Atlantis, she ends up wounding him with the Staff of Hermes. This presents a unique opportunity for the Assassins: leave Berg to die in Atlantis or take him as a prisoner. While the former seems plausible, the latter is an opportunity that would be seemingly hard to pass up. It's unlikely he escape, though not impossible. The corruption of the staff was overpowering Layla, meaning the Assassins likely focused on her when they got there, but ignoring Otso Berg and leaving him to die really isn't their MO.
As the Black Cross, even, it's possible that a story where Berg turns coat on the Templars isn't impossible. His personal hero is Shay Patrick Cormac, after all, who also performed a double cross in his time. Ultimately, Berg was at the mercy of the Assassins, and the consequences of this have not yet been shown.
There's no role for Otso Berg in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Perhaps William Miles has him in his custody, as the modern-day Mentor is nowhere to be seen and is only mentioned later on, or perhaps Berg has fallen off the planet. However, the likeliest scenario seems to be that Berg becomes important later. It was only in the DLC that he appeared for Odyssey, after all, meaning AC Valhalla's DLC is likely to continue its story. There's still a lot to be learned about the new Assassin's Creed modern-day "protagonist," Basim, and it could be that Berg shines some light there as well.
It's doubtful, though not impossible, that the two figures are familiar. It would be an odd twist, but again, Berg has Viking ancestors. It'll be interesting to see if that factor ever plays a big role, and at the same time, fans of the franchise may want to keep an eye on the two Assassin's Creed Valhalla DLCs: Wrath of the Druids and the Siege of Paris. Of these two, it would seem that Wrath of the Druids has the most potential for a Berg appearance.
Although the two are not related, Otso Berg has always had a strong connection to Shay Patrick Cormac, whose ancestors are from Ireland. It's possible there's something more here, it's possible it's only reference, but it's also possible that Berg has something to do with the modern day storyline while the new protagonist explores Ireland in the past. With the goddess Danu seemingly involved, it's possible that this is yet another Isu connection, one that could draw connections between Eivor, Ireland, Cormac, Berg, and Basim.
Now, whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but one big question, what happened to Otso Berg, is still unanswered and ought to be.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
