Pokemon GO trainers who want to defeat Giovanni during February 2021 should use this recommended team of counters to make the battle easy.

The latest Team GO Rocket event has arrived in Pokemon GO, which means that all of the grunts and bosses are back for another attempted takeover. In addition to an exciting list of bonuses and features that are here for the Rocket Celebration event, PoGO trainers are also going to have the opportunity to face off against all of the Team GO Rocket bosses once again... Including Giovanni.

The Team GO Rocket bosses are bringing quite a challenge for fans of the mobile AR experience this month and it is going to take some careful planning to defeat them without burning through tons of Revives and Potions. This time around Giovanni once again has a slightly different lineup that may require even the most experienced Pokemon GO battle fans to reevaluate their saved roster and consider whether they should switch things up.

Like always, Giovanni will kick off the fight with Persian, but after that point things get a little tougher. The second spot has three possible Pokemon (Kangaskhan or Nidoking or Garchomp), so it's very likely players may have to prepare for all the options and then take a gamble on their first attempt. Failing and then jumping right back in for a rematch with the correct counters is a totally viable strategy, so just be sure to get through Persian on the first attempt and learn what he has in slot number two.

Persian (like always)

Kangaskhan or Nidoking or Garchomp

Mewtwo

Tyranitar with Smack Down and Crunch

Machamp with Counter and Cross Chop

Lucario with Counter and Power-Up Punch

Conkeldurr with Counter and Dynamic Punch

Shadow Machamp with Counter and Cross Chop

Heracross with Counter and Close Combat

Machamp with Counter and Close Combat

Conkeldurr with Counter and Dynamic Punch

Dragonite with Dragon Breath and Hurricane

Shadow Dragonite with Dragon Breath and Outrage

Empoleon with Waterfall and Hydro Cannon

Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Psystrike

Mega Blastoise with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon

Swampert with Water Gun and Hydro Cannon

Kyogre with Waterfall and Surf

Mamoswine with powder Snow and Avalanche

Regice with lock-On and Blizzard

Shadow Articuno with Ice Shard and Icy Wind

Articuno with Ice Shard and Ice Beam

Togekiss with Charm and aerial Ace

Mega Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play

Shadow Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball

Mega Beedrill with Bud Bite and X-Scissor

Mega Charizard Y with Fire Spin and Blast Burn

Shadow Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch

Although many of Giovanni's possible defenders have been featured in his lineup before, it's worth noting that the ideal counters have shifted a bit, thanks to new evolutions, move sets, and the Mega feature. Trainers should definitely take some time to consider updating their counter rosters accordingly if they have the resources to do so.

With that lineup of Pokemon, players should have no problems countering any configuration of challengers that Giovanni shows up to the fight with. There are obviously lots of other Pokemon that can work as substitutes for this ideal roster, but most players shouldn't have much trouble assembling the team recommended above. All of those Pokemon are very relevant to the current Pokemon GO PvE and PvP metagame, so it's worth investing in them beyond this fight anyway.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS mobile devices.
