Samsung announces that its expensive Galaxy Z Flip 5G phone will be getting a price reduction to hopefully entice buyers in for 2021.

Whenever a new smartphone is announced, the one thing that's on everyone's lips once the hardware spec has been revealed is how much it will cost. Last summer, Samsung announced its new pricey Galaxy Z Flip 5G. Its most distinguishing feature is that it's a phone with a flip screen (hence the name), but more than that, it was priced at $1,449.99 on release. Fortunately, it looks as though the tech company will be reducing this expensive price tag.

In a recent announcement, Samsung said it will be shaving $250 from the original price, bringing the Galaxy Z Flip down to $1,199.99. While the price drop does look quite generous, it's still quite a bit more expensive than the new Apple iPhones which were selling for just under $1,000 when they were launched late last year. It's also much more expensive than Samsung's own Galaxy S20 FE 5G, which is priced at just $700.

The reason for the price drop, according to Samsung's own TM Roh, is to make modern flip phones accessible to everyone for 2021. The company is also looking to expand its line of foldable products, which is a pretty small market at the moment anyway. Samsung seems to be engaging in quite a bit of expansion lately. Just last year, it revealed its PCIe SSD hard-drive specifically designed for gaming PCs.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G has been likened to the classic Gameboy Advance SP console in terms of its design, both of which have a hinge which when folded down becomes a neat, square-like device. Obviously, the Z Flip is a lot more up to date and a lot more stylish, and has a seamless screen that runs the entire length of the phone's chassis. The fact that the screen itself folds over with no visible crease in the middle is something of a marvel in itself. Sadly, there is very little choice for modern flip phones with the only alternative being the Motorola Razr 5G, which has been also had a price reduction.

It's hard to say whether this discount on the Z Flip will bring in new customers. The market for Android phones is fierce with many companies going up against each other let alone Apple, who have already leaked information on the iPhone 13. Currently, Samsung are arguably the leading company when it comes to Android phones and a $250 price drop may be just what the tech giant needs to convince users that flip phones are the future.
