Maskmaker is a VR puzzle game where players create masks to travel through the mask realm. While it sound simple enough, the core gameplay is a tad more complicated than it sounds (in a good way), as developer Innerspace wants players to truly feel the role they take on in the virtual reality game: that of an apprentice maskmaker to the "leader" of the realm, Prospero.
Essentially, as players can see in the below trailer, they will be creating a variety of masks which increase in complexity. Painting the mask, finding components for the mask, finding blueprints for the mask, and putting these masks to use to explore the mask realm, solve puzzles, and advance the game's story are all intertwined in Maskmaker. Indeed, Game Rant has seen a little more of the game at a hands-off event and can say this trailer only offers a taste of what the game is about. VR game fans and/or those who just enjoy this unique premise will be able to get their hands on the game on April 20, 2021.
RELATED: It's Time for PlayStation VR 2
As a VR game, it'll be available on the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift S, Quest (via link cable only), Steam VR, and PS VR. It seems the game may have focused on PS VR more than other platforms, though the developer did express interest to bring it to more platforms natively. Notably too, while the game will be playable on PS5 technically through PSVR, there are no targeted enhancements on the next-gen console. Now, players will be able to see some improvements on the platform, thanks to the native enhancements the PS5 gives PS4 and PS VR games, but nothing like a true upgrade.
Ultimately, players will be stepping into the VR world of the mask realm, discovering a story, transporting around the worlds, and solving a ton of increasing complex and interesting puzzles. Maskmaker has an expected playthrough time of 5-6 hours, which is rather run-of-the-mill for VR games, but it seems that it will be time well spent.
Nonetheless, Maskmaker seems like a game that fans of VR games and intricate puzzles should keep an eye on. While the above trailer really only dips viewers' toes into the intricacies of the mask realm, it does seemingly get more complex and more challenging, and that can only be a good thing.
Maskmaker will be available on April 20, 2021 on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift S, Quest (via link cable only), PC VR via SteamVR, and PlayStation VR.
