In 2010, Rockstar Games released the original Red Dead Redemption to widespread critical acclaim, selling millions of copies and winning numerous awards in the process. With Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar took its open world western concept to the next level, vastly improving the visuals and providing near-unprecedented open world realism. Considering the staggering success of Red Dead Redemption 2, it's safe to say that many fans discovered the series for the first time with that game, and may never have had the chance to play the original.
Considering how popular Red Dead Redemption is, it's surprising that Rockstar has never made an attempt to re-release it, with the game still trapped on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Red Dead Redemption has never been released for PC, and it's only playable on modern consoles thanks to the Xbox backward compatibility program and the PlayStation Now streaming service. There is clearly demand for a Red Dead Redemption remaster, but Rockstar has made no attempt to make one so far.

Even so, rumors have persisted that a Red Dead Redemption remaster is in the works, with the rumors dating all the way back to 2016. Rockstar Games still has yet to announce such a project, but a new "leak" claims that it is indeed in development. And not only that, but if the leak is to be believed, fans will get their hands on the Red Dead Redemption remaster before the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The same leak says the Grand Theft Auto 6 release window is October 2023, so if it is accurate, that means the Red Dead Redemption remaster will release within the next couple of years. However, fans should treat this news with a massive grain of salt. The information stems from a 4chan AMA that was later posted on Reddit, and there is absolutely no proof provided to back up any of its claims.
Still, this isn't the first time that we've heard of a potential Red Dead Redemption remaster being in development. Last year, an Amazon listing leaked Red Dead Redemption Remastered, listing the game for $49.94 and a December 10, 2020 release date. That never came to pass, but it's possible that the game was intended for release last year, only to get pushed back for whatever reason.
Other rumors have pointed to a Red Dead Redemption Switch port in the works as well, though they have yet to come to pass either. In the meantime, fans can keep their fingers crossed for a Red Dead Redemption remaster of some kind, though they shouldn't get their hopes up until Rockstar Games makes an official announcement.
Red Dead Redemption is available for PS3 and Xbox 360.
