With Season of the Chosen, Destiny 2 adds activities and loot for existing playlists, alongside a new heirloom called the Hammer of Proving.

Destiny 2 is constantly updated throughout the year, and Season of the Chosen is just a few days away. Lasting between February 9 and May 11, this Cabal-filled season will feature a new three-player matchmaking activity, three strikes with one being brand new, extra loot to existing game modes including Adept weapons to Nightfalls, and more. The season's bespoke progression will be done via the Hammer of Proving.

It is worth noting that this year in Destiny 2 will function a bit differently. Even though the Hammer of Proving and all related content is part of Season of the Chosen, they will not depart the game until the end of the year cycle, presumably in fall 2021. So, players will have a more time to experience the new content before The Witch Queen overhauls the game.

Caiatl, the Cabal empress, is testing humanity's strength, so Guardians will have to use the Hammer of Proving to show her their might in ritual combat. The Hammer of Proving will be part of the new social hub called the H.E.L.M. where Vanguard operations will be taking place for the foreseeable future. Zavala will be there to meet the player and grant them this new item. At the center of the hall will be the War Table where players will place the Hammer of Proving to unlock its full potential.

At the War Table, players will be able to forge and socket Challenger Medallions and upgrade their Hammers of Proving. A new resource called Cabal Gold will be scavenged from the battlefield and used to challenge the legions of the Cabal empress. Three pursuit tiers will be available for players to upgrade the Hammer of Proving and unlock more Proving Runes that will customize and enhance the new Battlegrounds activity rewards.

This type of modifiable item isn't new to Destiny 2 but fans will have to wait and see how meaningful the Hammer of Proving ends up being. The prime example of this format came during Season of Opulence in summer 2019 where the Chalice of Opulence let players socket Runes, not unlike the Proving Runes, to forge weapons at the end of a Menagerie run.

That's not the only way players will be able to focus their loot gains in Season of the Chosen. Next to the War Table will be the refurbished Umbral Recaster and Umbral Decoder, where players will be able to tailor their engrams to ensure they have the best chance at getting the loot they want from Season 13.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
