In Valheim, the only way to make it to Valhalla is to survive, and players will need flint if they hope to stay alive long enough to find redemption.

Valheim is a difficult and sometimes brutal co-op survival game where players need to prove themselves worthy of entering Valhalla. If they hope to stay alive long enough, players will need to find all manner of resources, with flint being an essential early game item. Flint will allow players to build upgraded axes, knives, spears, arrows, and important tools later in the game, like the Chopping Block and Tanning Rack.

Flint is plentiful in Valheim's first region, the Green Forest. It can be found in rivers, right beside the banks. Rivers will run deep down in the valleys, cutting their way through the hard stone as they travel through the region. Players will need to walk down these slopes and jump into the water, where they will be able to find flint just below the surface. Flint will look like elongated stones resting at the bottom of the river. They can be picked up just by interacting with them, and players will not require special tools to collect them.

Much like wood, stone, iron, or copper, players will automatically learn new recipes for craftable items as soon as they pick up their first piece of flint. It is important to remember that each recipe will also require other resources that players will need to gather before building any of the items.

  • Flint Axe - 4 Wood, 6 Flint
  • Flint Knife - 2 Wood, 2 Flint, 4 Leather Scraps
  • Flint Spear - 1 Wood, 1 Flint
  • Flint Arrow - 5 Wood, 10 Flint, 2 Leather Scraps

Players will not be able to craft these items unless they have access to a workbench, so they will need to ensure they have built one in a safe place before they can take advantage of their new resource. All the recipes learned from collecting flint are Level 1, so they can be built straight away, as long as players can access enough resources.

Crafting items in Valheim can require a lot of resources, and many weapons that can be made from flint will require leather straps, so players should ideally have a ready supply of this resource to make sure they do not need to waste time hunting boar and deer each time they wish to make a new weapon or item. Anything that can save time in Valheim is important, as daylight is limited, and nighttime can be treacherous if players need to go out looking for supplies.

It is also possible to repair tools, so ensuring that you regularly keep your tools in good condition is an excellent way to save on resources and effort to put toward other things that will help players survive and even prosper on the journey to Valhalla.

Valheim is available in Steam Early Access now on PC.
