This guide explains how to unlock and craft Wolf Armor, which prevents players from freezing as they explore the Mountains in Valheim.

The extreme temperatures found in the Mountains in Valheim can make exploring the biome quite difficult. Indeed, players will need to find ways to combat the cold while they are in the Mountain, or they will ultimately freeze to death. One way to do that without any significant maintenance is to wear a set of Wolf Armor in Valheim, and this guide will detail exactly how to unlock and craft this powerful protective gear.

To begin, there are three pieces of Wolf Armor, a chest, legs, and a cape, and fans will unlock the ability to craft them after locating Silver. The trick here is this resource in Valheim is found in only one place, and that is underground in the Mountains biome. This means that players will need to use another method to fight off the cold until they are able to create their Wolf Armor, and there are several approaches that can be employed.

One such approach is to craft a Frost Resistance Mead Base in a Cauldron and then put it into a Fermenter. This will create a Frost Resistance Mead that Valheim players can drink to temporarily prevent freezing, but it does require quite a lot of materials and time. As such, fans may instead want to make a trail of Campfires and Bonfires in the Mountains, placing them so that it is possible to navigate from one to another without taking significant damage from the cold.

Regardless of the method that a player selects, there are two things that they should have on hand before they begin their searches for Silver: a minimum of an Iron Pickaxe and a Wishbone. The first of these two items is required for mining Silver, and it is created at a Forge. The second makes locating Silver significantly easier, and it is drop from Bonemass, the third boss in Valheim.

Once a player has obtained these two items and devised a plan for dealing with the temperatures in the Mountains, they should head into the biome with the Wishbone activated. They should then traverse the area until green sparks start emanating from their character, and they should dig down when that effect becomes very frequent. Doing this should ultimately lead fans to Silver, and they can use their Iron Pickaxes in Valheim to extract the ore and unlock the Wolf Armor.

With respect to how to craft this gear once it is unlocked, here are the required materials for each piece:

  • Wolf Armor Chest: 20 Silver, 5 Wolf Pelts, 1 Chain
  • Wolf Armor Legs: 20 Silver, 5 Wolf Pelts, 4 Wolf Fangs
  • Wolf Armor Cape: 4 Silver, 6 Wolf Pelts, 1 Wolf Trophy

Clearly, Silver is the foundational resource in Wolf Armor, and players will need to collect quite a lot of it if they want to craft every piece. That said, only the Cape is required to prevent freezing in the Mountains at the time of writing, and fans are thus advised to craft that piece first. While it is possible that this will change in a future Valheim update, fans need not worry about obtaining so much Silver immediately.

Valheim is available now in Early Access on PC.
