Pokemon GO developer Niantic announces its Valentine's Day event for 2021, including a new evolutionary line and unique Avatar cosmetics.

Many ongoing service titles host events to celebrate holidays throughout the year, and one of the more prominent inclusions following the packed December holiday season is Valentine's Day. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War announced a Valentine's-themed Kiss Confirmed limited-time mode earlier today, and Pokemon GO similarly let players what they can expect to encounter during its annual holiday event this year.

The Pokemon GO Valentine's Day event in 2020 introduced Generation 5 monsters Audino and Alomomola while cycling other cute Pokemon with pink color schemes into wild encounters, Raids, Eggs, and Field Research rewards. Previous years were similarly themed with Pokemon such as Smoochum, Clefairy, and Chansey, and the 2021 event taking place between February 14 at 1:00 p.m. and February 18 at 8:00 p.m. local time will revolve around the Psychic-types Munna and Musharna.

It is odd that these two Unova Pokemon are being spotlighted this year considering Pokemon GO began adding Kalos region Pokemon in December, opening the door to Fairy-type representatives such as Armoatisse or Slurpuff. However, Niantic has gone all-out with cosmetic Avatar items as well as event-exclusive stickers, giving players access to gear befitting the dreamy Pokemon.

Beyond those two new additions, Niantic confirmed in its recent post that this year's Valentine's Day event also features paired Pokemon such as Plusle and Minun or Volbeat and Illumise in the wild, as well as monsters like Eevee, Luvdisc, and Woobat hatching from Eggs. "Lucky" Pokemon GO players can also find Feebas in the wild, evolve Kirlia to receive a Gardevoir or Gallade with the unique attack Synchronoise, and complete Field Research tasks to potentially encounter Spinda with a heart pattern.

Many of the aforementioned Pokemon will also appear in Raid battles, with this breakdown:

  • One-Star Raids: Ralts, Volbeat, Illumise, Feebas, Munna, and Espurr
  • Three-Star Raids: Togetic, Espeon, Umbreon, Gardevoir, Gallade, and Alomomola
  • Five-Star Raids: Latias and Latios
  • Mega Raids: Pidgeot, Gyarados, and Ampharos

Alongside all of this will be a Valentine's Day Collection Challenge requiring players to catch 12 different Pokemon, including both Latias and Latios. Furthermore, there will be a one-time bundle in the shop with three Remote Raid Passes, as well as active bonuses such as better chances to become Lucky Friends and an increased trading range.

Before the Valentine's Day 2021 event begins, fans of the popular mobile game will be able to take part in Pokemon GO's Lunar New Year event from February 9 to February 14. Tauros is being featured to celebrate the Year of the Ox, and Gyarados will also play a prominent role in the festivities as a Pokemon with both a red-colored shiny form and a Mega Evolution.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS devices.
