With the release of Subnautica, many fans are excited to experience the great depths of the ocean floor. And now that Subnautica has arrived on the Nintendo Switch, more players than ever are experiencing all that the game has to offer.

Like other open-world exploration games, there are huge environments to explore and materials to collect, and one of the rarest and most valuable are diamonds. Diamonds can be found all across the map in either their natural crystal form on the seabed or in shale outcrops. For the intent of this guide, the shale locations will be the emphasis since it is generally safer and has a better chance to gather more.

Diamonds, just like in Minecraft, are useful for crafting incredibly valuable items such as the Fabricator, Habitat Builder, Vehicle Upgrade Console, and the Mobile Vehicle Bay. So for players looking for a little extra help with acquiring this rare material, here are a couple of places to find diamonds in Subnautica.

The first place gamers can find diamonds is from some shale spots near the Aurora Base at (562,-111,170). Players will need a radiation suit to be able to gather these materials. Simply face the Aurora Base and swim towards the tip of the structure. Below, there should be a Mushroom Forest area with shale chunks on the wall under Lifepod 4. It is advised to build a mini base with a scanner room nearby to help make scavenging easier.

For the second shale location, while facing the Aurora, turn to the left and look at a large cloud that hangs fairly low to the surface of the water. If players keep swimming in that direction, it will take them to a Mountain Island, the coordinates for this being (182,-36,850). Gamers may want to use the sea glider and keep it close to the surface if they want to avoid encounters with dangerous sea creatures. Once there, swim towards the bottom edges of the island and farm for the diamonds. Fans should also stay cautious around this area as well; many dangerous creates spawn around here too.

It should be noted that diamonds aren't the only material to come from shale. Players can also get Lithium and Gold, as well. So while it won't be super common, gamers should get diamonds about a third of the time from harvesting shale if they are lucky. Hopefully, this guide helps players have a general idea of how to start searching and makes the process a lot easier.
