The year of the ox has begun and players can celebrate its arrival in Pokemon GO with various new spawns and limited-time research tasks.

The newest event that has come to Pokemon GO is the Lunar New Year event. This is to coincide with the Lunar New Year in the real world where the year of the rat has been left behind and the year of the ox has begun.

With 2021 being about the year of the ox, Pokemon GO has put multiple bovine Pokemon on the forefront for this event. Players are now able to participate in timed research tasks that involve Pokemon such as Miltank and Tauros.

There are four total steps for the Lunar New Year timed research tasks with the majority of them being easy to complete. In addition to item prizes, these tasks additionally allow players to get encounters with a variety of helpful Pokemon that are recommended catches.

Players will only have until February 14th, 2021 at 1:00 PM to complete these tasks and claim these prizes. Those who are interested in these rewards are recommended to begin as quickly as they can so they do not run out of time.

The first step of the Lunar New Year timed research tasks are:

  • Transfer twelve Pokemon - Ten Pokeballs
  • Catch seven Fire-type Pokemon - Charmander encounter
  • Send one gift to a friend - Goldeen encounter

After players complete these tasks and claim the offered prizes, players will get their step reward. This will give players an encounter with Miltank, 1,000 XP, and 20 Gyarados Mega Energy.

Step number two is made up of the usual number of tasks, but with the difficultly of completion going up somewhat. These tasks are:

  • Power up Pokemon twelve times - Five Razz Berries
  • Evolve three Fire-type Pokemon - Torchic encounter
  • Send three gifts to friends - Magikarp encounter

Once these tasks are complete, players can claim their step reward of an encounter with Tauros, 1,000 XP, and 30 Gyarados Mega Energy.

The third step once again raises the difficulty of the tasks, but they are still very doable by the majority of Pokemon GO players. These tasks are:

  • Use twelve berries to help catch Pokemon - Ten Pokeballs
  • Catch fifteen Fire-type Pokemon - Tepig encounter
  • Send five gifts to friends - Seaking encounter

For completing the third step, players get yet another encounter with Miltank, 1,500 XP, and 50 Gyarados Mega Energy.

Finally, step four is the hardest of all the steps and is the last one that players will do. The tasks that make it up are:

  • Make twelve great curveball throws - Three Pinap Berries
  • Catch 20 Fire-type Pokemon - Darumaka encounter
  • Send seven gifts to friends - Meditite encounter

Completing this last step will give players an encounter with Tauros, 1,500 XP, and 100 Gyarados Mega Energy.

As players spin Pokestops during the Lunar New Year event for 2021, there are four different field research tasks they can obtain. These tasks have no time limit, but players can only hold a limited number of them at a time. The possible tasks are:

  • Catch six Water-type Pokemon - Miltank encounter
  • Send three gifts to friends - Meowth encounter
  • Catch twelve Pokemon - Meditite encounter
  • Send ten gifts to friends - Galarian Meowth or Alolan Meowth encounter
