The popular post-apocalyptic series has begun filming of its eleventh and final season, after a series of delays on production.

Production has revealed that filming of the eleventh and final season of the hit zombie series, The Walking Dead, has begun this week.

On February 8, The Walking Dead's official Twitter account shared a first photo of the set with the caption "the first day of the last season of #TWD." The image teases a burnt windmill in Alexandria, which looks like it has been left in ruins. Season 10 saw Beta lead a horde of walkers and Whispers to the city. Season 11 will most-likely be focusing on the aftermath of the Whisperer War that was the focus of season 10.

In September 2020, AMC confirmed that the show would conclude with an eleventh season. The show has proven to be popular among fans since its premiere in October 2010. The new season is expected to have 24 episode that will air over a two-year period going into 2022. This will be the first season without series regular and fan-favorite, Danai Gurira, who has portrayed Michonne since the third season.

Season 10 of The Walking Dead premiered on October 6, 2019, and was originally supposed to conclude in April 2020, but post-production was delayed due to COVID-19. Instead, the original season finale episode aired on October 4, 2020, and AMC announced that it will also be airing an additional 6 episodes in February 2021.

There were also delays to the start of filming of season 11, which was originally set to premiere in October 2020. Despite delays on production and the announcement of the conclusion of the series, the franchise is long from ending. A spin-off series about Daryl and Carol is expected to premiere in 2023, with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride reprising their respective roles. Another spin-off series, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, premiered last October and has a second and final season in the works. There is also a spin-off movie starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes that is expected to happen in the future.

A premiere date for the eleventh season has not yet been announced, but at least fans have the last 6 episodes of season 10 of The Walking Dead, which premieres February 28 on AMC, to fulfill their post-apocalyptic needs for the time being.
