Disney has decided to fire Gina Carano from the Disney Plus show after the actress received backlash on social media for controversial posts.

Gina Carano, who is known for playing the role of Cara Dune on Lucasfilm's The Mandalorian, has been fired from the show. The news comes after fans demanded action from Disney, with the #FireGinaCarano hashtag on social media, following a controversial post on the actress’ official Instagram account.

In an official statement released to the press, Lucasfilm confirmed the news on Wednesday night. "Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," the statement verified. It went on to refer to her social media posts as “abhorrent and unacceptable”.

Carano received a lot of criticism from Star Wars fans when she, in her Instagram Story feed, compared being a Republican in the USA to being a Jewish citizen during the Holocaust. The post, which has since been deleted, received a lot of backlash, with many social media users sharing screenshots of the Instagram Story and asking for Disney to fire her for her views. However, as soon as the news of Disney letting Carano go broke, the mood on Twitter changed. While most were pleased with the decision, some criticized Disney for taking so long to take this step.

This wasn’t the first time that Carano, an outspoken conservative, received negative publicity for her political views, which she often shares on her social media accounts. In November, 2020, she mocked people who were wearing face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19 and in another post, she went on to suggest that voter fraud had occurred in the 2020 US presidential elections, without any proof to back her claims.

The Mandalorian debuted on Disney Plus in November 2019 and Carano appears in the first two seasons of the popular show as a former Rebel Alliance shock trooper, who goes on to become a mercenary. Following Disney’s announcement, she will not appear in Season 3, as production on the season has not begun. At the moment, there is no confirmation on whether there is a plan in place for Carano's character or if the role will be offered to another actor.

The Mandalorian’s first two seasons are available to stream on Disney Plus.
