With Pokemon's 25-year anniversary coming later this month, it looks as though the team behind the insanely popular Nintendo staple is looking to celebrate in style, with a range of events and rewards. On Pokemon day, which occurs on February 17, Post Malone will be hosting a virtual concert to celebrate the franchise, while McDonald's is offering Pokemon cards in Happy Meals in accordance with the major milestone.
It seems Pokemon Sword and Shield fans will be getting their own in-game items, with players set to receive a new Pikachu with a unique ability it hasn't had up to this point. Announced via a tweet on the official Play Pokemon Twitter, this new version of the iconic brand mascot will be able to use the sing attack, channeling a celebratory melody that can put other Pokemon to sleep.

As for how players can get access to the new Pikachu, the Twitter account claims more information is on its way soon, with February 25 supposedly bringing more information regarding how to access the singing pocket monster in their game. The news hasn't exactly gone down well with Pokemon fans, however, the likes of which have received a number of special event Pikachus in previous months. Some have even criticized the fact that the Pikachu doesn't come with something unique, with the sing attack being a pretty standard move that Pokemon like Jigglypuff and Chansey can use in the base game.
Fans seemed to be expecting something different considering the series is approaching its 25th anniversary, with an array of Pikachu's wearing Ash Ketchum's various hats from the anime dropping late last year. Regardless, it seems a singing Pikachu is the next in-game event players can look forward to, with Nintendo set to reveal more about the in-game gift closer to the official Pokemon day celebrations. If it's anything like previous additional Pokemon, it will probably be redeemable via a code implemented at the game's menu screen.
As for Pokemon's wider plans for this year, the franchise will be welcoming a new game in New Pokemon Snap this April, which acts as a follow-up to the cult-classic spin-off that launched on Nintendo 64 back in 1999. New Pokemon Snap will take players to a fresh region filled with Pokemon from several different regions, including Grookey, Torchic, and, of course, Pikachu. There are even theories that a brand new Pokemon remake might emerge later this year, with fans speculating about a potential return of Diamond and Peal in the same vein as Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Saphire.
Pokemon Sword and Shield are out now on Nintendo Switch.
