The creator of the original Ghosts 'n' Goblins talks about the upcoming Resurrection reboot and also his fondness for making challenging games.

With announcements about the upcoming Ghosts 'n' Goblins Resurrection on Nintendo Switch, gamers who are perhaps a little older may be waxing nostalgic about the original release, which hit arcades more than thirty-five years ago. With the reboot due for release on February 25th, the original creator, Tokuro Fujiwara, recently opened up in an interview about how he feels about Resurrection.

With many fans loving the art style of the newly polished remake of Ghosts 'n' Goblins, some seem to be unsure about the fresh visuals. However, Fujiwara says that seeing such polarizing opinions made him realize just how fondly fans remember the original. He says he enjoyed the art style of the classic side-scrolling platformer, but with the reboot, he really wanted to utilize "animated scroll" motifs which he feels maintain the series' "horror theme park" style.

Fujiwara admits to being excited about getting the chance to work on Ghosts 'n' Goblins Resurrection, saying that taking on the project enabled him to jump back a few years. While aware of the challenges any development brings, he saw it as an opportunity to "express the title" on a much larger scale now that hardware has improved and there are fewer limitations these days.

Capcom developed and published the original Ghosts 'n' Goblins in 1985. It is often remembered as one of the most difficult games of its era. Fujiwara himself said that he made the game challenging so players would feel a sense of accomplishment in overcoming such challenges, adding, "I believe players get frustrated and feel the game is being cheap when there are too many accidental or haphazard elements that become the challenge and affect the player’s progression."

Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection will be available for Nintendo Switch on February 25, 2021.
