Microsoft issues another statement regarding continuing issues with its newest controller disconnecting from the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles have had a solid start since launching in late 2020. Both remain sold out and demand is expected to remain high for months. Yet, even great console launches have their flaws. Mirroring the Nintendo Switch's success being marred by its Joy-Con drift issue, Xbox Series X/S  controllers have seen reports of issues with connectivity, and to Microsoft's credit, it publicly stated the issue is being investigated.

Over the past month there have been an increasing number of reports that Xbox Series X/S controllers are having problems. Specifically, the Xbox Series X/S controller can, at times, simply not connect to its home console. The issue can be worked around with relative ease, but still requires players to power down their console and take out the controller's batteries like resetting a router. It's enough of an issue that Microsoft feels it deserves to be addressed.

In a statement from Microsoft issued via its Xbox support website, the company says it's aware of an ongoing issue in which some Xbox Series X/S controllers lose connection to their console. While Microsoft doesn't clarify the issue or acknowledge a fix is coming soon, it does offer some ideas for how to fix it. Rebooting the console and controller is one option. Another option is to connect the controller via USB cable.

What the message from Microsoft does say is it's trying to collect further data on the issue. It asks users to make sure they submit feedback from the console immediately after they potentially encounter the issue. Xbox even asks that users connect a second controller if the first won't work, just to make sure the feedback goes through with all relevant data about the situation.

The big question that Xbox Series X/S users have is whether or not the issue is permanent. For example, the Joy-Con drift issue is hardware-related, meaning it requires a technician to repair. It's possible the Xbox Series X/S controller issue is software-related, meaning it can be solved with a firmware update or a change to the console OS.

Time will tell what the ultimate solution is to the Xbox Series X/S controller connectivity issue. Xbox Series X/S users can, at the very least, hope that Microsoft is investigating the issue further and will be communicating about it with a degree of transparency. Fans should likely expect another Xbox Series X/S controller update whenever Microsoft is able to provide one.
