It has been one year since shooting on season 2 of The Witcher began. Commemorating the one year mark, series creator Lauren S. Hissrich shared a heartfelt post on her official Twitter account, looking back at the difficult year that she and her Netflix team has had to endure amidst the pandemic.
In the past year, production on many TV shows and movies has been postponed due to COVID-19, leading to a delay in major release dates. Cinemas across many parts of the world still remain closed, with many movies even opting for the exclusive digital release route. The Witcher has been among the list of productions that have had to hit pause on shooting several times, either due to a positive COVID-19 case on set or simply because a lockdown did not permit the shoot to continue.

The Witcher was, in fact, the first TV show being shot in the UK that had to halt production in March 2020. The decision was made after Netflix shut down all of its productions in the USA and Canada when the first pandemic-related lockdown was announced. While shooting resumed in August, season 2 of Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s literary series faced another bump in the road in November. Filming had to be halted when several crew members tested positive for COVID-19. To make matters worse, just as the show was going on a break for the holidays, lead actor Henry Cavill sustained a hamstring injury, which affected the filming schedule once again.
After a year of hardships, Hissrich and her team did not give up and it seems like production is currently going on in full swing, with the crew and actors present on set. The showrunner has constantly kept fans of the show updated, sharing news on her Twitter account. Her tweets have always been appreciated for being honest, transparent and, according to her latest tweet, the crew is even working on Saturdays, probably to ensure that the already delayed season comes to fruition soon.
When the second season of the show was announced, Hissrich had said that it wouldn’t be available for fans to watch until 2021, with a projected release date of summer. However, with the multiple delays in production and shooting still ongoing, it is unclear how the release will be affected. There is no confirmation on the same at the moment and the showrunner has not revealed an official release date either. Season 2 of The Witcher will see Cavill return as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Joey Batey as Jaskier.
The Witcher season one is now available on Netflix.
