Despite little news, The Last Jedi director is reportedly still involved in a new Star Wars trilogy.

Following a long silence and rumors of its cancellation, there may be some news on Rian Johnson's planned Star Wars trilogy. It has been reported that, despite the lack of details, Johnson's trilogy is still very much in the works.

Following an interview with Johnson, USA Today reporter Sariah Wilson took to Twitter to address the matter that most fans seemed to be asking her about: Though the interview has yet to come out, Wilson's tweet seems to say that the topic was brought up and that Johnson confirmed it is still in development.

News of the new trilogy first came out in 2017 around the time Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released. It was reported that Johnson would write and direct three new movies that would explore new characters and new areas of the Star Wars universe. Since then, there has been little talk of Johnson's ongoing involvement with Star Wars and many speculated that the trilogy had been canceled following the divisive reaction to The Last Jedi. The fact that it was not mentioned at all during Disney's Investor Day in December 2020 added fuel to these reports.

If this is indeed a confirmation from Johnson, it is exciting news, albeit without much real information. Based on Wilson's tweet, it sounds like Johnson is still in the early stages of the project and will likely still be a while until there is some solid news. Meanwhile, Johnson has kept busy with his critically acclaimed 2019 movie Knives Out and is apparently at work on a sequel to that hit movie.

Following Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, enthusiasm in the Star Wars movies seemed to dim. However, The Mandalorian has ignited some new life into the franchise and it might be the perfect time to start a new trilogy within the universe. Even those who were not fans of The Last Jedi must admit Johnson is a talented filmmaker. It is very exciting to think of what he'll be able to do with a little more freedom in telling his Star Wars stories.
